he folded his arms, leaning back against the mezzanine’s cold railing, “if you’ll remember, I told you three years ago you’d be better off sending Forever War to either TOR, Titan, Baen or Pocket Books, someone with an established name in science fiction.” Gavin shook his glass and looked into it, as if searching for answers there. “Hammer-Fiske has published four science fiction novels in the past five years. They should know how the hell to market my science fiction novel.” Jim sighed. Seemed he’d been doing that a lot lately because Gavin had done nothing but ignore him. “Those other novels were commercial techno-thrillers, video game and television series tie-ins. Not classic, epic space

Instead, she spotted a battered cardboard box, which she pulled out by one of its flaps. The box was filled with books similar to the one she found on the floor—tattered and yellowing, adorned with somewhat cheesy cover art. Except for a few classics by authors like Verne and Wells, most of them fell into the sci-fi genre. Cole admitted to losing interest in this type of literature after a few pages of convoluted descriptions. However, she recognized some of the titles because she had been repeatedly told that she should read them: Asimov, Russ, Vonarburg, Bradbury, Heinlein, Bujold, Engh, Le Guin.

"Any favorites?" Scott joined her by the bookshelf, scanning the titles. "Oh, there are so many. I enjoy science fiction and fantasy genres the most. Some of my favorites include 'Dune' by Frank Herbert, 'Ender's Game' by Orson Scott Card, and 'Harry Potter' series by J.K. Rowling. But I'm always open to discovering new books too." Fiona nodded, impressed by Scott's literary tastes. She herself was an avid reader and appreciated finding common ground with him.

Ever had that feeling where a sci-fi book gets lost in explaining how its warp drives work instead of just telling you what it's like to be there? That's what I try to avoid. So many 'soft' titles end up being 'hard' on the philosophy and world-building anyway. I'd argue the classics like 'The Left Hand of Darkness' or 'The Dispossessed' by Ursula K. Le Guin are still the pinnacle—they center entirely on anthropology and societal structure, and the tech is just part of the furniture.

More recently, Becky Chambers's 'A Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet' comes to mind. It's basically a slice-of-life story on a spaceship, focusing on the crew as a found family. You get the feeling of a lived-in universe without a single engineering manual. Martha Wells's Murderbot Diaries, starting with 'All Systems Red', is fantastic too; it's a first-person narrative from a security construct that just wants to watch media, so its observations are sharp and human, not technical. The tech is just… there, like our smartphones are to us.

One I don't see mentioned enough is 'Klara and the Sun' by Kazuo Ishiguro. It's from the perspective of an AI companion, and her understanding of the world is so beautifully, fundamentally different—it’s all about observation and flawed interpretation, not specs. That’s the real trick, I think: finding stories where the point-of-view character isn’t an engineer or scientist, but someone just trying to live in the future.
