Let's just say the nature of consciousness is central. It's less about a shiny robot companion and more about what it means to be real when you're millions of miles from home. The prose is dense but rewarding if you like your space travel eerie and your AI questions unsettling.

For something newer and getting a lot of buzz, I'd point you to 'The Mountain in the Sea' by Ray Nayler. It's not a grand tour of the galaxy; it's set on an isolated oceanic planet. But the space travel is there in the setup and the existential isolation. The AI thread is masterful, focusing on a non-human intelligence emerging in octopuses, but it ties directly into classic sci-fi questions of what we'd do if we met another 'mind' out there, artificial or otherwise. It feels very now.

Actually, I've found 2024's sci-fi output a bit underwhelming on the blockbuster front, but some quieter titles have really grabbed me.
