I watched him as he walked out of my penthouse with determination and urgency in his steps and knew that he was going to make everything go smoothly as he usually does. I rest back against the couch I was seated on, closed my eyes, and smiled. If she thinks that she could just escape my clutches like that, then she’s got to think twice about that. But then the next minute, a frown replaced the smile on my face, as my thought drifted to the dangers that she was about to face soon. From past histories, the previous Blue Bloods weren’t able to overcome all the challenges they faced from the moment they were discovered before they were eventually killed.

"What do they want?" Kael hesitated, his gaze flicking toward the door, as though checking to make sure no one was listening. "They want the power of the Healer of the Eclipse. You." Vanessa’s breath caught in her throat. "What do they need with me?" Kael’s eyes darkened. "To control you. To use your bloodline for their own ends. You’re not just a healer, Vanessa. You’re the key to something ancient. And they’ll stop at nothing to unlock it."

“What the hell” Vanessa didn’t look away from Ray. “I’ve been tracking Kayla for months. Knew she was getting help. Knew it was someone close. When I found out it was you…” Her voice hardened. “I waited. Let it play out. Wanted to see how far you’d go.” Ray’s face twisted. “You’re ruining everything.” “No,” Vanessa said. “You did that.” She zip-tied Ray’s wrists with practiced efficiency, clearly not her first time.

VANESSA POV Vanessa had been stuck in that hospital room for six damn hours pretending to be devastated about a miscarriage that actually really never happened. Ryan had done his part perfectly. He brought in fake blood work results again, made some somber declarations about the loss. Even patted her hand sympathetically while Catherine sobbed in the waiting room. Now Vanessa was sitting on the examination table while Ryan finished up the discharge paperwork. “Thanks for your help really,” she said quietly. “I really appreciate everything you did for me today.”

The television was on in Marcus's study. He hadn't turned it on. He'd been sitting in the dark for hours, the photograph of Chloe clutched in his hand, when the sound of a familiar voice pulled him back to the present. He looked up at the screen, and his blood turned to ice. Vanessa was on every major network. She sat on a cream-colored sofa in a studio that had been designed to look warm and inviting. Her dress was soft pink, her hair perfectly styled, her makeup subtle but deliberate. She looked like the girl next door. The victim. The wronged woman standing by her man.

Every muscle in my body coiled tight, ready to strike. Vanessa had poisoned Evan Evergreen. Not some rogue element. Not a rival pack. Not even one of Evan's own enemies. Vanessa. The woman standing in my office. The woman I'd been sleeping with. The woman who'd been whispering in my ear for months about strategy and opportunity and taking what was owed to me. She spotted Beta Declan by the pool table and approached, hooking his keys out of her back pocket as she stepped down into the room. "I take it my car is still in one piece, Sapphira?" He asked, a slight glimmer in his eye as he chalked his cue. "Yes, Beta. Thank you." She blushed, feeling several eyes turn on her as she dipped her head and handed him the keys. "I think this is the first time I've seen you in here." Gamma Brandon smirked, taking a swig from his drink. "Not one for social gatherings, Sapphira?" The Gamma's mate, Hunter, winked.

"It's just because of Ryan! From now on, I'll keep my distance from him, as long as you take the blame for him properly!" I stared at her pleading face. After a long silence, I suddenly nodded. Vanessa froze for a moment, then a flash of wild joy crossed her face. I ignored her. I slowly pulled out my phone and pressed play. "As long as you take the blame for Ryan..." Her face stiffened, then she instantly turned pale. Her eyes widened as she lunged forward to grab my phone. I kicked her to the ground. "Stay the hell away from me!" I pushed open the hallway doors and walked straight into the payment lobby, raising my voice.
