Olivia Bennett wasn’t the type to cry in public. She wasn’t the type to get drunk on a Thursday night, either. But there she was, curled up on a high stool at the edge of a sleek hotel bar, staring down into the amber swirl of her third whiskey sour.

It burned going down, but not nearly enough.

Her reflection in the mirror behind the bar looked like a stranger. Red eyes. Smudged mascara. That thousand-yard stare of someone who’d just watched her world implode.

Two years. Two years wasted on a man who called her his everything, who promised forever—and cheated with the one person she trusted most.

Clara.

Even thinking the name made her stomach twist.

Clara, her best friend since college. Clara, her bridesmaid-to-be. Clara, currently screwing her fiancé on a desk Olivia used to work at.

She took another sip, resisting the wave of nausea that came with the memory.

She hadn’t said a word to either of them. Just walked out of the office without a scene. Without screaming. Without slapping the smug look off Clara’s face or asking Jason how long it had been going on. The silence had spoken for itself—and left a bigger hole in her than she wanted to admit.

A fresh start. That’s what she needed.

That’s what tomorrow was supposed to be: her first day at a new company. A new job. A new chance to put everything behind her.

But tonight?

Tonight she was allowed to fall apart.

“Another?” the bartender asked, eyeing her carefully.

Before she could answer, someone slid into the stool beside her. A man’s presence—confident, warm, and far too close.

“I’ve got this one,” he said smoothly.

She turned, ready to tell him off. But the words caught in her throat.

Tall. Dark-haired. Unreasonably attractive. His suit looked expensive, cut perfectly to a broad chest and strong shoulders. His jaw was sharp, his stubble neatly trimmed, and those eyes—cool, steady, dark as midnight—held hers with unsettling intensity.

He wasn’t grinning or hitting on her like some drunk college kid. He was calm, quiet. Dangerous in a different kind of way.

“You don’t have to do that,” she said, voice rough.

“I don’t,” he agreed. “But you look like you could use a better drink.”

She blinked. “That obvious, huh?”

He tilted his head, a ghost of a smile at the edge of his lips. “Let me guess. Bad breakup?”

She barked a dry laugh. “Try betrayal with a side of corporate disaster.”

“Messy,” he said. “I approve.”

That surprised her. “You approve?”

“Of clean breaks,” he clarified. “Sometimes burning it all down is the smartest thing you can do.”

She studied him, trying to figure out what he was doing here. A man like this didn’t just appear next to women like her. Not in real life. Not unless he wanted something.

But then again… maybe she wanted something, too.

“Alright,” she said finally, lifting her glass. “To burning it down.”

He clinked his glass against hers. “Cheers.”

They drank in silence for a while. It was oddly comfortable, the quiet between them. No pressure. No expectations. No names.

“I don’t usually do this,” she muttered, half to herself.

“Do what?”

“Drink with strange men in fancy bars.” She paused. “Or… consider doing anything else with them.”

His brow quirked. “But tonight’s different?”

She didn’t answer. Didn’t have to.

Something in her chest cracked open, raw and aching. Maybe it was the alcohol, or the pain, or the exhaustion of holding herself together for too long—but suddenly, she didn’t want to be alone anymore.

Not tonight.

“Just for tonight,” she whispered, almost daring herself.

He understood instantly.

He stood, held out his hand.

She took it.

---

The hotel suite was just as polished as he was—dark wood floors, minimalist furniture, expensive everything. She didn’t ask his name. He didn’t ask hers.

Clothes came off slowly at first, then faster. Their mouths met like magnets, all heat and need and desperation. She didn’t think. Didn’t overanalyze. She let her body guide her, let the pain melt into pleasure, let the loneliness slip away for one blissful night.

And God, he knew what he was doing.

He touched her like he already knew every inch of her, like he wasn’t a stranger at all. And she responded like a woman starved—because maybe she was.

She fell asleep tangled in his arms, breathless and boneless, too tired to think about what any of it meant.

---

The morning light was merciless.

Olivia blinked against it, groaning as she reached blindly for the blanket. The soft cotton sheets were unfamiliar, and her body ached in ways both pleasant and confusing.

It took her brain a second to catch up to reality.

Then her eyes shot open.

Oh no.

She was still in the hotel room. Still in bed. Still naked.

And not alone.

The man from last night—her stranger—lay beside her, his chest bare, his face peaceful in sleep. His hand rested near her hip, fingers twitching lightly as if still holding her.

Panic surged through her.

She slipped out of bed as quietly as possible, grabbing her clothes from the floor in a frantic scramble. Her heels. Her phone. Her bra that had somehow ended up across the lamp. She tugged her dress over her head and ran her fingers through her tangled hair, cursing under her breath.

No note. No goodbye. No second thoughts.

She was out the door and in a cab before he even stirred.

---

The rest of the day blurred.

Shower. Coffee. Regret. That's all she could think of for the excruciating two weeks before her interview.

She told herself it didn’t matter. That it was just a one-time mistake. That she’d never see him again.

Her new job—working for one of the top consulting firms in the city—was supposed to be her fresh start. A chance to rebuild.

She arrived ten minutes early, dressed in her most professional outfit, makeup applied like armor. Her nerves were buzzing, but her resolve was firm. This was her shot. She wouldn’t screw it up.

The receptionist smiled and handed her a badge. “Mr. Carter will see you now.”

She blinked. “Mr. Carter?”

“Our CEO. He likes to meet all new hires personally. Just down the hall.”

Olivia nodded, palms suddenly sweating as she walked the long hallway toward the executive office.

She adjusted her blazer. Smoothed her skirt. Rehearsed her introduction.

Knocked twice.

“Come in,” came the deep voice from inside.

She opened the door—and her world tilted.

There, standing behind a sleek glass desk, dressed in a crisp navy suit with piercing dark eyes and an all-too-familiar face, was the man from the hotel room.

Her one-night stand.

Her boss.

Nathan. Freaking. Carter.

He looked up, and for the briefest moment, something flickered in his eyes—surprise, confusion, recognition.

Then he masked it, stepping forward with a calm expression and an outstretched hand.

“Miss Bennett, I presume,” he said smoothly. “Welcome to Carter & Co.”

Olivia shook his hand, her grip firm despite the chaos screaming inside her.

One night. One mistake.

And now… her very complicated beginning.

  • Fired.....then pregnant    chapter 18:The calm before the break

Olivia's POVThe silence after Vanessa's warning felt suffocating.Nobody moved.Nobody spoke.Even the city beyond the penthouse windows seemed unnaturally still.Nathan was the first to break the silence."What does that mean?" he asked. His voice was calm.Too calm. The kind of calm that hid something dangerous underneath.Vanessa swallowed. For the first time since she'd arrived, she looked uncertain."I've only seen him like that twice."I felt my stomach tighten."And?" Nathan pressed.Vanessa looked away briefly."The first time was when a business partner tried to expose him."My pulse quickened."What happened?" I asked.Vanessa hesitated."He burned the man's company to the ground."Nathan's expression didn't change.Neither did mine.Because somehow that wasn't the answer I'd been expecting.Vanessa noticed."Not literally," she clarified. "Financially."A pause."He spent six months destroying every contract the guy had. Every client. Every investor relationship."Nathan f

  • Fired.....then pregnant    chapter 17:The voice of the master

Olivia’s POVThe second I heard his voice, every memory I had spent years burying clawed its way back to the surface.Mitchell.For a moment, I wasn't standing in Nathan's penthouse.I was back in New York.Back in that apartment.Back in that life.Back in a place where every smile came with conditions and every apology hid a threat. My stomach twisted violently.Nathan's entire body stiffened beside me.Across the room, Vanessa looked like she'd seen a ghost. That was what scared me most. Not the call. Not the threats.Vanessa was terrified. And Vanessa Owens wasn't afraid of anything.Nathan switched the call to speaker. No one protested. No one moved. We all listened."Mitchell," Nathan said evenly.A soft chuckle came through the line."Good. I was worried your security team would answer."Nathan's face remained expressionless."What do you want?""I think you know."The casual confidence in Mitchell's voice made my skin crawl.Nathan didn't respond.Mitchell continued."Actually

  • Fired.....then pregnant    chapter 16:face to face

Olivia’s POVEvery nerve in my body locked up.“She’s here?” I whispered.Nathan’s expression became dangerously unreadable. The kind of calm that came right before something exploded. The security guard’s voice crackled faintly through the intercom again.“She refused to leave, sir. Said Miss Bennett would want to hear what she has to say.”“No,” Nathan said immediately. “Send her away.”But before the guard could respond, I spoke.“Wait.”Nathan turned toward me sharply.“Olivia.”“I want to hear her.”Absolutely not.The words were written all over his face.“She could be setting something up,” he said quietly once the intercom muted.“She already has.”“That’s exactly my point.”I stood slowly, forcing my shaking legs to cooperate.“Nathan, if Vanessa came here herself, it means something changed.”“Or it means she wants access to you.”“She already had access. Through the calls. The messages. The photos.”Nathan clenched his jaw hard enough for the muscle to twitch.“She’s danger

  • Fired.....then pregnant    chapter fifteen :Nowhere feels safe

Olivia’s POV I stared at Nathan like I had misheard him. “In my apartment building?” I repeated faintly. Nathan nodded once, his face carved from stone. Every ounce of warmth from moments earlier vanished instantly. The room suddenly felt too small. Too quiet. Too dangerous. “That doesn’t make sense,” I whispered automatically. “He doesn’t even know I still have that apartment.” Nathan didn’t answer right away. Which told me everything. Mitchell knew far more than we realized. A cold wave of dread crawled through my chest. “What kind of car?” I asked shakily. Nathan glanced back at his phone. “Black Audi SUV. Registered under a shell company.” Of course it was. Mitchell had always hidden behind layers. Fake accounts. Fake numbers. Fake apologies. Nothing was ever direct with him. “How long has it been there?” Nathan’s jaw tightened. “Three days.” My stomach dropped violently. Three days. Three days Mitchell had potentially been sitting outs

  • Fired.....then pregnant    Chapter fourteen:Two The Man Outside

Olivia’s POV My entire body went cold. Nathan’s expression changed instantly the second Tyler spoke. Not fear. Something worse. Calculation. The kind that happens when danger stops being theoretical. “Nathan?” I whispered. He held up one finger toward me silently, eyes still fixed ahead. “Describe him,” he said into the phone. Tyler answered immediately. “Male. Mid-thirties. Dark hoodie, baseball cap. Standing across the street near the south entrance.” My breathing became uneven. “Nathan…” “The sign,” Nathan snapped. “What does it say?” A pause. Then Tyler cursed softly. Oh God. “What?” Nathan demanded. “It says…” Tyler hesitated. “‘Daddy deserves to meet his baby.’” The room tilted beneath me. A sharp wave of nausea hit so suddenly I had to grab the edge of the counter to steady myself. Nathan turned toward me instantly. “Hey—sit down.” I shook my head rapidly. “No. No, no, no…” This couldn’t be happening. Not this fast. Not here.

  • Fired.....then pregnant    chapter 13:The talk

Olivia’s POVFor a moment, I forgot how to breathe. The sound of Vanessa’s voice hit me like a hand around my throat—cool, polished, terrifyingly familiar.Nathan’s entire body went rigid beside me.“Vanessa,” I said quietly, forcing strength into my voice even though my pulse was spiraling out of control.A soft laugh crackled through the speaker.“There she is.”God.She sounded exactly the same.Like Manhattan rooftops and expensive champagne and secrets whispered behind closed doors.Like danger wrapped in silk.Nathan reached for my hand under the counter, grounding me instantly.“What do you want?” he asked coldly.Vanessa hummed thoughtfully. “Straight to business. I can see why she likes you.”My stomach twisted.Nathan’s grip tightened slightly.“You’re trespassing into dangerous territory,” he said evenly. “So I’ll ask you once more before this becomes a legal matter—what do you want?”Another laugh.“You CEOs always think lawyers scare people.”“No,” Nathan replied calmly.
