“There are several color palette catalogs there. Choose the one that best fits the tone of your book.” I stood and walked over to the table. There were many palette books, each with a different theme: dark, pastel, dramatic, warm, cold. It felt like stepping into a world full of hidden messages. “Your book,” Rudolf said quietly, “is about someone discovering their strength through the most painful path. I think colors that are too bright would destroy that meaning.” I turned toward him. “So you’re suggesting dark colors?” He shook his head. “No. Fully dark colors would make readers assume it’s a tragedy steeped entirely in darkness. Your book isn’t only about wounds. There’s hope.”

The perfection of the scene was suffocating, but that was why I quickly noticed something out of place. They had a shelf of books here in the living room, and the book seemed to be arranged by colour rather than alphabetically. The colours were also ordered in shades, from darkest to lightest on the shelf. So the dark red book between books of lighter red, stood out like a sore thumb. Looking around only once, I stood up to investigate. When I pulled it out, I saw it was a book on pack history, unsurprisingly. But when I moved to put it back, I noticed the black button tucked behind the neatly arranged spines.

I took the book from her hand. It was light brown with a hint of a purple undertone. It was a little darker than I wanted, but I think it would look great with a little white mixed in. I took the book to the counter, where the paint was mixed, and laid the booklet on the counter. “What can I do for you?” The man behind the counter asked. “I like this color, but I think it is too dark. Can you do this color but add a little white to it?” I pointed at the color in the book.

“No, I don’t concern myself with others on most accounts, but I know how to keep them absent. Donate them what they anticipate and they think they have you all figured out. Most individuals have unimaginably brief consideration spans.” Her gaze limited on him, pondering if he was performing presently. “I don’t judge books by their covers.” He tilted his head, giving her a doubtful smile. “No?” She shook her head. “Book covers bore me. I’m colorblind, so I have no choice but to go by what’s inside.” “No joking? You can’t see any color?” “Blue. Everything else is sort of level and gloomy. Nicholas handed me a beer before sitting on the chair beside me. We sat there for about five minutes in silence.
