THE STING OF THE VAMPIRE'S BITE
I blurted, the lie tasting foreign on my tongue.
The man’s eyes narrowed, his gaze cutting through me like a blade. Slowly, he closed the book in his hands and set it down on the table beside him. Rising from his seat, he walked toward me, each step deliberate and heavy with purpose. “Is he really your boyfriend,” he asked, his voice low and dangerous, “or are you just saying that to get what you want?”
My throat felt dry, but I nodded quickly. “Yes,” I said, forcing the word out with conviction I didn’t feel. “He is my boyfriend.”
