Taken by the Herd King
The world becomes noise—wind, water, the haunting groan of something ancient moving underneath the surface of the earth.
I try to keep walking, but the ground beneath me changes. Mud pulls at my boots like it’s trying to reclaim me. I lurch forward. One boot stays behind, lost beneath the sucking, wet earth. I nearly fall but manage to wrench my leg free—barefoot now. I try to back step, but the other boot sticks too. With a cry of frustration, I rip free, both feet now bare and sinking into the muck.
I clutch Rex tighter. My fingers are numb. My breath shakes in and out of me, fogging against the torrent.
