Suddenly, a man appeared at the doorway, bowing slightly. It was the driver. He whispered something into Penelope’s ear. Her eyes lit with irritation, then quickly smoothed into a polite mask.
“I have to go,” she announced loudly. “Important meeting with the elite women of the council.” She turned to Jessica, ignoring me like I didn’t exist. “Jessica, darling, the driver will take you home after you’re done.”
Jessica nodded politely, but when Penelope turned and walked out without a single glance at me, I felt a strange relief wash over me. At least she was gone.
