THE RUNAWAY BRIDE OF GREYFALL CITY.
THE WEDDING THAT NEVER HAPPENED. Teresa ole had always envisioned her wedding day as the happiest occasion of her life. She thought about flowers, white orchids, lilac roses, petals floating under her feet like blessings from the universe. She thought about joy, loud laughter, her mom crying softly into a handkerchief while her dad, trying to appear firm, would show his weak point through trembling hands. She thought about love. What she didn't imagine was the tightness in her chest, the wedding corset so tight that she could barely breathe in, and that every step closer to the altar felt like a step towards a life not of her choosing. The Greyfall Cathedral was full. There were guests seated in rows, awaiting a performance, her performance, to be precise. A performance she could no longer participate in. The organ started, deep and hollow, echoing off marble floors. The air smelled of incense and old secrets. Her fiancé, Jerry Desmond stood at the altar, handsome, confident, the city's favorite philanthropist. Every woman whispered about him; every man admired him. He was powerful. Influential and Untouchable. And she was about to marry him. Teresa heart thudded. Her hand tightened on the bouquet so that a petal snapped. Sweat slipped down her spine in a slow trail. She took one step down the aisle, then another. Then she saw it. A face In the back row. Watching her. Not a friend. Not a relative. Not someone who belonged. A man she'd never seen before, Dark eyed, Expression unreadable. He stared at her as if he knew her, truly knew her in a way even she didn’t understand. Her heart slammed against her ribs. Something inside her broke. A warning. A whisper. A cry. Run. The bouquet fell from her hand. Gasps rippled across the cathedral. Before anyone could move, utter a question, or stop her, Teresa lifted her dress, turned around, and ran. Not just out of the aisle. Not just out of the church. Out of her old life. And into one she had no idea waited. THE CITY THAT HIDES ITS SECRETS Greyfall was not kind to runaways Rain lashed down in sheets as Teresa ran across the courtyard, the lace of her gown trailing through puddles. Her veil ripped away, flapping behind her like a ghost trying to flee from her head. She didn't care. Her lungs burned. Her legs quivered. Her mind was racing faster than her body. She didn't stop running until she dodged into an alleyway between two old buildings-cracked bricks, graffiti, and a broken lamp flickering like a dying heartbeat. Her breaths came in painful pulls. What have I done? She sank against the wall, grasping at her head. She had left everything behind: her home, her job, her family, her whole identity. But she couldn’t stay. Not after what she discovered three nights ago. A discovery that changed everything. She closed her eyes, remembering how she found the envelope hidden in Jerry Desmond's study, in a locked drawer which she had opened out of curiosity. or intuition. Inside was a contract. A contract with her name, TERESA OLE, written boldly on top. A contract which in effect sold her. She did not marry Jerry Desmond for love. Wasn't even for companionship. It was a transaction. Her father owed Desmond's family a big debt: money lost in some kind of failed business deal-money her father couldn't pay back. So, he gave something else. Something Desmond wanted. Her. She felt sick. And tonight… she was to sign her life away. Lightning cracked across the sky. Footsteps pounded in the distance—many footsteps. Security guards. Find her! Check every corner! Her blood ran cold. They were already searching for her. He was looking for her. She pushed away from the wall, her panic thick in her throat. A hand caught her wrist. She almost screamed before a soft voice whispered. “Don’t. They’ll hear you.” She looked up. It was the man from the church. Her heart stuttered. Who was he? Why was he here? He released her hand slowly. If you want to survive tonight, he said calmly, you have to come with me.Teresa swallowed.Yes.Larris eyes widened in horror. Teresa, NO!She reached up.Touched the USB around her neck. She held it between her fingers. The Ghost reached out a hand.Larris struggled, roaring, DON’T GIVE IT TO HER!Teresa stared into the Ghost's masked eyes. And smiled.Catch.She tossed the USB high into the air.In an instant, Larris reacted slamming his elbow backward into the Ghost, sending her stumbling. One shot rang outThe bullet ricocheted off the metal beam.Teresa grabbed her father and dove behind a pillar as the Ghost lunged forward to catch the USB.But it hit the ground. And shattered.A small spark fizzled out.The Ghost froze. What have you done? she hissed.Teresa stood tall.It wasn’t the real key.The Ghost's voice dropped to a deadly whisper. Kill them. But before her masked guards could move Sirens wailed outside.Floodlights poured through the shattered windows.Police burst in through all the doors, guns drawn.DROP EVERYTHING! HANDS IN THE AIR!C
AN UNEXPECTED ALLYAt night, Greyfall was a maze of shadow and neon. Larris cut his headlights and drove several blocks without them, navigating alleys and side streets with the confidence of a man who had memorized every inch of the city.Teresa clutched the edge of her seat. Where are we going? To someone who owes me more favors than he likes to admit.Ten minutes later, Larris parked behind an unmarked warehouse. The inside smelled of motor oil and old secrets. A man in a grease stained shirt looked up from a workbench.Let me guess, he muttered. You’re in trouble again.Larris smirked. You love it, Leon.Leon grunted. I tolerate you. Who's the girl? Larris said, "is Teresa. And someone is trying to kill her.Leon stared at her for a long moment. Then nodded once. Figures Larris finally meets someone during a job and she brings him nothing but problems.Leon, Teresa aid gently, do you know who the Ghost is?His expression tightened. Nobody knows who the Ghost is. That's why they'
SHADOWS IN GREYFALLThe world outside this balcony was quiet, uncomfortably so for a city like Greyfall.Teresa felt it before she could explain it. A tension and heaviness of an old instinct told her something was shifting again, and she had learned to trust it. it had saved her life more than once.Larris stepped beside her, still holding a mug of coffee. You’re thinking again, he said, a tiny smile tugging at the corner of his mouth. She kept her gaze out on the view. I can’t help it. Peace feels strange.Peace is allowed, he said softly.Yes. But peace in Greyfall that is what feels strange.Larris chuckled. “LYou sound like me.Maybe I've learned a thing or two.He wrapped an arm around her shoulder, warm and solid. What's bothering you?Teresa hesitated. Did you hear the news this morning? No.They moved Desmond to Blackwater Prison.Larris expression changed. He was outwardly calm, but that alertness flickered in his eyes. Already? That was fast.Teresa nodded. And they're say
THE CITY OF SHADOWSHours later, they reached the outskirts of Greyfall City again.Exhausted.Starving.Cold.But alive.Larris took her to a hidden apartment above an old bookstore—another safehouse. The moment they were inside, Teresa collapsed onto the couch. I cannot keep running like this.Larris knelt beside her. I know. What do they want so badly that they’re willing to kill me?Larris hesitated. Then he showed her.A leather briefcase.Inside it documents, bank accounts, shares, contracts, her name everywhere. This, he said, is your grandfather's legacy. And the key to controlling it is your signature.Theresa stared, throat tight. My whole life was a lie.Not a lie, Larris said softly. A secret meant to protect you.She looked up at him. Why protect me? Why did my grandfather trust you?Larris looked away.Because I used to work for Jerry Desmond.Time froze. The breath seemed to leave her body. What?I wasn’t always on the right side, he said, his voice dropping. Your gran
THE SAFEHOUSE.The safehouse wasn't what Teresa had expected. It was a small, wooden cabin, tucked deep inside the Greyfall Forest. Humble and Quiet. Almost peaceful if not for the danger that lay in wait behind them, like a shadow.Larris checked every window and door before allowing her inside. Are we… alone here? she asked.Completely, he said to reassure her. Only you and I know this place exists. She swallowed nervously. So what happens next?Larris hesitated. You rest, he said finally. Then we talk.Teresa nodded, although her chest ached from exhaustion and fear. Inside the cabin was warm, lit by a single lantern. Larris gave her a long hoodie to replace the soaked wedding dress. She changed in the small bathroom, staring at herself in the mirror.Mascara streaked her cheeks. Her hair was tangled. Her body shook. This wasn’t the woman she thought she’d become. But maybe that wasn't a bad thing. When she came out, Larris had brewed tea for her.She took a sip and whispered, Th
THE STRANGER IN THE RAINTeresa stepped back, her wet dress clinging to her body like a second skin. Who are you?The man nodded toward the street, flashlights sweeping in the rain. Right now? The only person who isn’t planning to drag you back to that cathedral."Answer me," she demanded, her voice shaking. He held up his hands. "Fine. My name is Larris. And I've been watching Jerry Desmond for months."Her stomach knotted. Why?Because your fiancé isn't who you think he is.A distant shout, now closer, echoed.Larris clutched her hand once more. Move. She hesitated. Then she heard Desmond's voice, angry, ordering.Bring her to me, NOW!Her decision was instantaneous. She ran with Larris They ran down alleys, puddles splashing below their feet, as rain turned the whole city into a glowing smear of streetlights and danger.Larris led her to a basement garage behind an abandoned laundromat. He unlocked a dusty car, ushered her inside, and sped off just as the guards rounded the corner
