A loud snap echoed through the room. I gasped, clutching my chest as a deep pain stabbed through me. Like something had been ripped out of me, clean and sudden. My knees nearly gave out, and I gripped Zane’s arm to stay upright. "What was that?" Kane asked sharply, his eyes darting around, panic rising in his voice. Ariel stood up slowly and looked directly at me, her lips curving into a smile. “The bond,” she said simply. “Broken. Officially.”

“Then start with why the bond is gone, because if you think I’m just going to stand here and accept that, you’re out of your fucking mind.” “I didn’t break it,” he said. That… that didn’t help. My hands clenched, frustration rising again. “Then explain it,” I said, sharper now, my chest tight with something between anger and panic. “Because from where I’m standing, it feels pretty fucking broken.” Eric tilted his head slightly, studying me like that reaction mattered more than the question. “It’s not broken,” he said slowly. “You’ve just been separated from it.” Didn’t feel right, didn’t fit.

I paused, as the glass shattered in my grip, blood pouring out but I didn't care. “Please tell me you taught the guy a lesson.” “I nearly killed him.” Briar nodded slowly, not surprised. “Did you?” “No. I pounded his face into the floor.” There was a long silence. I took another drink. “So… what happened next?” he asked cautiously. “Did she give you an explanation?” “She defended him, so I broke the bond.” Briar stared at me, blinking like he didn’t hear right. “You what?” “I broke the fucking bond, Briar.” My voice rose, cracking. “I cut her off, It’s over.”

“And maybe you can help me find a book for a person problem I’m having as well.” “Oh?” She quirked an eyebrow at me, her curiosity piqued. “Broken mate bonds that were never formed. Or at least the feeling of it.” I let some hurt go into my voice, watching her hand dart to her chest in sympathetic pain. “Oh, um, we do have a few books on the bond psyche that might help you. Just met or a refusal to form after years?” She inquired. “Just met. And I want to help her get better.” I could see her eyes well up with she’d tears when I said it, a few sniffles coming from her.

The words rip out of me before I can stop them. My heart is racing. No. Not racing. Jerking. Like it forgot how to beat. I grab my chest. And then I feel it. The bond. The thing I built. The thing that held him. The connection that wrapped around Darius’s wolf for years like chains made of magic. It is breaking. “No,” I whisper. The word falls out of my mouth without air behind it. The bond shudders violently inside my mind and then another crack runs through it and the pain doubles, sharp and brutal, like something just dragged claws through my soul.

The boom of the bond's disintegration masked Darius's distant voice. I scratched at the floor, attempting to grasp onto something. The light from the moonstone flickered slightly, unable to bear the stress. Then the agony vanished as abruptly as it had started. When I opened my eyes, I was back in the grove with Darius cradling me. However, something had changed. We were barely connected, a thin thread that may break at any time. "Aria," Darius said in a quivering voice. "What's going on?" Tears were running down my cheeks as I glanced up at him. "The bond is rupturing."

Marcus shoved him aside and, with trembling hands, snatched up the paper. The first line was written in bold strokes: "Application for Dissolution of Marriage. Applicants: Marcus Hale, Clara Wilder." Julia limped in behind him, trying to clutch his arm like before. "Marcus, my ankle hurts." Ruthlessly, he ripped his hand away. "Ah!" The motion sent Julia crashing to the ground for real this time, pain shooting up her twisted ankle. Her face contorted as she sucked in sharp breaths. Marcus gripped the divorce papers tighter, his face pale, and showed her no concern at all.

The bond throbs painfully-like it’s begging me to turn around. Lyra whimpers. Just look at him. “I can’t,” I whisper. Because if I see him, I’ll want him. And if I want him, I’ll break. So I keep walking. When I finally reach the trees, the bond snaps painfully, like a rubber band stretched too far. Benjamin doesn’t call my name again. I don’t know if that makes it better or worse. But I don’t turn back. Not this time.

I could feel my forehead burning up, while my chest heated up further; I thought it would split open. "Delan-ey," Kai mumbled, his eyes tightly closed. While initially we felt silence and couldn't reach Delaney, we knew the bond was still there. But the more the pain intensified, I could feel the previous strings that held us together snapping, each leaving an empty hole inside. That meant one thing: the bond was being broken.
