“This is Evelyn all over again.” The words landed like a punch to my gut. My mind shut down momentarily as flashes of memories began to play in my mind. Flashes of a terrified face, of blood… so much blood. Not now. This isn’t the time. I shook my head in an attempt to get the thoughts out before glaring at Trevor, which he immediately apologized for.

My eyes flicked to the dashboard. Another sound. Louder. A split second of stillness. Then a flash. Orange light reflected violently across the windscreen. Heat surged forward. The roar came next, sudden, consuming. Flames erupted from the front of the car, swallowing metal in seconds. Smoke thickened. The vehicle shuddered. I did not panic. I had anticipated a move. Just not this quickly. Fire clawed up the glass. The world outside distorted in waves of heat. For a brief moment, framed in flame, I saw her face in my mind.

Huh? Why do I recall the faces I had seen beyond the fire now? Vyin's eyes go dimmer as he reads my mind. He focuses exclusively on me, rapt and patient as he waits for me to gather my thoughts. Ah, I never thought about it until now. I did see someone- some people rather, just before I supposedly blacked out. It rings in my mind, beating forward with discomforting pangs as my mood deteriorates into something bleak and dismal. As my vision honed to bring me to peer through the sizzling flames of the gushing fire, two faces popped up behind that fiery wall for a brief moment before those words were said to me.

They must've really wanted something to take back home. Bliss washed over me. I wouldn't forgive myself if I was the only one who lived. I would hate myself if I was taken captive to be the foreign tourist object in a den full of Satan's spawns. As my consciousness faded, I found myself thankful for the little moments of happiness I shared with everyone. I've heard it a lot in movies, how one's life flashed before their eyes when they're dying. Mine flashed in seconds, fast yet memorable. My wolf disconnected from me, and I willingly allowed myself to be drawn into darkness.

I was completely paralyzed, staring at the bright speeding car headlights coming towards me. I could see my life flash before my eyes right before I heard my name. “Aurora!"

Something flashed before my wide open eyes. And then darkness.

I am dropping into an abyss of darkness, freefalling into a pit of despair. They say that your life flashes before your eyes when you stare death into the eyes…well, that is BULLSHIT. The only thing flashing in front of these eyes is the fury that I am feeling as a fire sets course from my core to every corner of my body.

My limbs turned heavy and my vision blurred. The last thing I saw before I blacked out were those green eyes. Where had I seen them before?.

When I finally managed to flutter them open, I slightly regretted ever fighting them in first place as sharp light hit my eyes. My eyes searched the ceiling above me and the bright light, wondering where was I. It was only when the numb ache on my arm sensed through me did everything rush back to me. The lights. The dress. The dance. His arms. His eyes. Image after image flashed in my mind, starting a migraine making me want to scream my lungs out. 'Zayden!'

Third pov Flashback. At that crucial moment when Alaric lost his balance, he thought about the saying that when a person is about to die, their life flashes before their eyes. He had heard that in moments of shock, time would slow down and memories would flicker by— that the brain would rapidly retrieve emotionally charged or core moments as a kind of survival mechanism, replaying a person’s past up to that point. He always thought that was ridiculous. He never believed in it.
