Two flames. And me, caught in the middle, already burning.

"You need to calm down a little. I know you're upset, but I can see the fire burning inside you. You look like you're going to combust, and I don't know what that level of Hellfire will do." I could hear him trying to soothe me, but it was like a small breath of wind in a raging storm. Not enough to blow out the flame, but just enough to spread the fire further. It went from the fire burning in me internally to the fire spreading all over my outer body. Its scorching flames licked my skin, making it crawl on my body, squeezing tight against my bones as it shrank in the heat.

Sitting on her chair, Lucy drank a glass of cold water thinking that the burning sensation will calm down if she drank cold water. But, nothing has stopped the burning sensation. Your body has to be weak; your will power has to erode. Like I said, it’s a test. You have to be at your weakest for the fire to work on your seal.”

Lowell leans against the tree, wiping sweat off his brow. His entire body burns with heat and pain emanating from within; his muscles ache as though they have been at war for days. At intervals, fever descends and leaves him weak and lightheaded. He grits his teeth against the agony, determined that he will not let his body betray him any longer.

Aeliana's POV I wake up burning. Not the feverish kind of burning that sends you reaching for aspirin and cool cloths. This is something else entirely. Something that starts deep in my core and spreads outward like liquid fire, pooling in places that make my breath catch and my thighs clench together. What the hell?

“I hope you like pizza, because with sounds like that, I’m either only ever feeding you pizza, or banning it from the house in jealousy.” “Tom!” I shrieked, surprised by his words. I splashed water at him, but he just smiled. “I’m just saying. So, I ran into Doc in town. He gave me some advice for the burn. If you’re up for trying, it may be worth it.” “What is it? Cause honestly, I’ve tried just about everything in the past. Hot water and then lots and lots of aloe, plus time is about the best I’ve got.”

Beneath it, a faint, throbbing heat burned. "They told me I got burned by hot oil when I passed out," I said, forcing the words out past the lump in my throat. He hummed low in his throat. "How many times have you fainted this month?" "Twice," I murmured. "Your vitals are stable, but your blood levels are low. And you’re fighting an infection." He scribbled something on his chart. "I’ll prescribe medication for your arm and something to help regulate your blood count. You need to rest. And eat. You can’t starve yourself, Diana."

Looking out, I felt nothing but a quiet release. … Tucker sat in his office with his brow furrowed. Late at night, his phone buzzed, Shelby's name lighting up the screen. He let out a tired sigh before answering, "Hello? What is it?" Shelby's voice came through, laced with frustration. "Tucker, are you still at the office? It's late. Why aren't you home yet? Don't you care about me anymore? Do you even realize how humiliating it was to sit through that dinner by myself tonight?"
