I said to her, and watched as she tried to take everything in. "He's saying nonsense baby", Caleb yelled from behind her in the chair where he sat with a makeshift bandage they had made with her shirt. "What the fuck are you lying about?" She asked. "I killed him off, not the other way round." Caleb said and I heard her gasp. "Wha...?" Tatiana's mouth opened as she looked between me and him. "He was being a little whimpy shit, still afraid of bears and attached to that fool because of memories and brotherhood that is long gone. I had to kill him off", Caleb said.

Caleb was holding a bloody rock in his hand. “Caleb!” I ran forward and wrapped my arms around him. “Caleb, I was so scared! What happened? You’re bleeding!” Caleb dropped the rock and held me tightly, his chest rising and falling rapidly. “It just grazed me. It knocked me over for a bit, but... I really think he planned to kill me.” I looked down at the older man on the forest floor. His eyes were wide and sightless, and his skull was dented in. It didn’t take a medical degree to determine this guy was dead.

A soft knock at the door made me lift my head. Damien glanced at me before standing up to answer it. He was always on guard, his body tense with the instinct to protect. But when he opened the door, it wasn’t an enemy waiting on the other side. It was Caleb. He stepped inside quickly, his dark eyes sweeping over the room before settling on me. “We need to talk.” Sophia sighed. “You always say that, and it’s never good news.” Caleb ignored her and turned to Damien. “The northern pack wasn’t just attacked—they were slaughtered.”

“Isn’t that right, my love?” But Alpha Torin didn’t answer. His eyes had fallen somewhere far, as if he was way in his head than here with them. Caleb was so alert that he sensed Alpha Torin’s hesitation and contempt. Even he was surprised. This was an opportunity. He was his Beta, he could talk him out of listening to the pack members. He stood, and the room quieted at once. “If I may,” Caleb started, his voice clear and laced with steel, “perhaps death isn’t the best punishment for someone like her.”

“I’m pretty sure I could kill him.” I didn’t doubt that he could - after all, Caleb was the Beta of his pack, the Pacific Star pack, and he was much bigger than Garrett. But Garrett was a sly bastard, who had somehow managed to trick the strongest Alpha I knew to his death, and I couldn’t allow someone else to die, especially not for my sake. I had never told anyone what Garrett really did to Mateo, but after what happened tonight, the truth came tumbling out. Both Riley and Caleb were horrified, and offered for me to sleep on their couch for the night.

Robert stared silently at the image on the screen, then muttered, “He died in the Redfall breach. There was a funeral. I was there.” “Apparently,” Elias said, stepping into the room, “someone else was too.” Charlotte didn’t speak. Her fingers tapped against her thigh in a slow, unrelenting rhythm. He was confused. “Dad,” Caleb called and walked closer. “What do you want?” The Alpha Bellowed. He was still angry with Caleb who knew all this information and didn't say anything. It was almost as if the pack wasn't important to him. And the death of the members is nothing but mere games.

Never the less Sabastian begins the meeting. He goes through the stats of deaths from these silver bullets, and I’m impressed at how much data they have collated in a few days. They go through the deaths of those who have died from various packs or rogues. My eyes snap open when I see a picture on the screen of someone I recognise. Fuck.

Her feet drummed on the moving pad beneath her as she came to a realization that she signed her Death Contract because she had long ago annihilated her self-esteem. She let others push and pull her through life and she had let Brayden do the same. Even though she had told him no she hadn’t expected him to actually take no for an answer. And her response of declining his offer was more of a gut reaction that she would have instantly shoved back down into the corner of her caged off soul.
