Beyond Night
As he rose, Rufus opened his tent with a fast flourish.
“Sir, something moves in the night beyond our eyes.” Rufus’ face shone in the near to full moonlight, and August read fear.
“Is the camp being roused?” He felt silly after the words tumbled from his mouth.
“Yes, sir.”
As August hurriedly donned his clothes, and pulled on his sandals, he asked, “What is that damnable smell?”
“That’s a matter of some debate among the servants, sir,” Rufus quipped sharply, eyes scanning the exterior of the tent. “It’s not from within the camp or the village, like a smell that moves in a cloud or a swarm.”
