I chuckled a little. Carl didn't just lose me—he lost himself, too.
"Is there really no chance for us anymore, Hailey?" he asked, just like I knew he would.
"Carl," I said. "When you told me you were going to sleep with Wendy, did it ever even cross your mind that you were my husband? The father of our child? Even if Wendy was actually dying, she was just a friend to you.
"But you, in all your infinite wisdom, decided to sleep with her because you figured she was going to die anyway. Honestly, it's the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard. You really opened my eyes, Carl."
