A roaring wind fanned the flames of a massive fire, and thick smoke hung in the air. The red-hot sparks brushed over her skin, and her nostrils were full of the smell of gas and the acrid smell of smoke. A scrawny young man pushed her out of the fire with difficulty, but a burning rafter fell from the roof onto his leg, pinning him to the ground.
