The Fleeing Princess
She fluttered toward him like a white butterfly desperate to land.
He stepped aside. Her arms closed on empty air.
She faltered, then forced a sweet smile. “Adrian, forgive me. I only just discovered your true identity. I—” her voice softened, almost coy—“I’ve always cared for you. The things I said before, it was the family, the alliance… I was forced. But now… look at us. We’re meant to be. You and I, the perfect match.”
Adrian’s laugh was sharp, cruel. “You? Perfect?” His eyes glittered like knives. “You’re a fraud. Every word from your mouth is filth.”
