“Maybe the four-inch heels weren’t the right choice for a long night.” “Well, if it makes a difference, I appreciate them,” he said as his fingers skimmed against my thigh. Oddly it did, and his touch only ignited my need for more. “The fireworks are starting soon,” I said. “And?” “My hotel isn’t far.” He froze and stared at me for a moment. “Fuck, yes.” He started to pull me, and a hiss of pain left me as I stumbled. Strong arms caught me, drawing me closer and lifting me enough to take the pressure off.

That is the strangest thing I have ever thought in my life. That familiar itch starts to spread across my neck, down my chest to my stomach. It itches so bad, I pull up my shirt and when I do, I scream out into the empty dark room that is lit only by the moonlight and a single nightlight over by the entrance. Daring to look down again, I see that where I had just scratched, is a gaping wound and there is a maggot crawling out of it. I hear a noise from behind me and when I turn on my heels, I watch as the same man from before stands about a foot taller than I am and is staring right into my eyes. He opens his mouth and states, “You have finally awakened. Good.”

The fire within him consumed his body, leaving no room for rest. He yearned to vanish, to avoid ever having to confront them again. Maybe I should see a doctor. My legs felt weak as I staggered to the door. My right hand reached for the doorknob, but it wouldn't open. Gavin had actually locked it from the outside. Not done with my pain, I felt my stomach churning. I hadn't eaten since morning, and it was already 3 pm. Whether I fainted or fell asleep earlier, I don't really remember. I only remember thin flashes and Gavin's punches; after that, everything was dark. I had to get out. I could die if I stayed here.

The sound of gunfire and the cries of battle echoed in their ears as they disappeared into the darkness.

Guilty conscience, indeed. "Of course, I've been sleeping here. If you hadn't woken me, I probably would've slept till the end of my shift," I replied nonchalantly. Veronica chuckled, "Have some water. I won't disturb your sleep any longer." She left a glass of water and departed. Watching her retreating figure, I pulled out the recorder from my pocket and smiled faintly. The next time I worked the night shift, neither Dr. McCartney nor Veronica were present. Strange, where could they have gone?
