I had failed her, despite promising myself that I wouldn't let her cry. My mood soured and I felt shittier than before. “Let's sleep.” She nudged, trying to place my back on the bed. I resisted. “Damon,” she sighed. “What if I have another nightmare?” I had had five nightmares in two days. I didn't think closing my eyes was a luxury I wanted to engage in anymore. It was as if the demons in my subconscious lurked around nearby, ready to yank me into darkness anytime I let down my guard and closed my eyes.

Adam's apple bobs up and down, unsure of the recent nightmare. The Nightmares No one knows when they started, not even his father. In their earliest memory, they remember a little boy waking up screaming and crying over a dream he could not explain. Because the moment he wakes up, he forgets everything. The reason that scares him always remains behind a thick wall of shadows. In his nightmares, he never sees anything clear other than hearing cries and feels pain, as if someone has squeezed his heart and stabbed him in the back. He would always wake up after struggling in the dark, mumbling unrecognizable words.

I sit in bed, staring absentmindedly at a corner of the room. Moonlight seeps through the windows and paints everything a serene shade of blue and the silence is calm, but my mind is far away from the present. Unlike my dreams, I remember my nightmares in brutal detail. They are never scary, just reminders of my past and all the things I could have, should have, done differently. My nightmares are a collage of regrets resurfacing to remind me who I am and what I destroyed.

Mia really was a magnet for weirdos. He can’t deal with this right now. He wasn’t at his best today. Last night, he’d had a nightmare. It was dark except for an artificial blue light dangling above his head. Below the light, he was trapped in a pool full of blood, bodies, and huge wooden puzzle pieces. Corpses. Cut-up and torn. Bodies. Decomposing limbs. Eyes pulled from their sockets. Worms and maggots feasting on the carnage. And everywhere it reeked of blood. Even now and fully awake, he could smell it in the air.

I pushed it open silently and entered. It was everything I had expected. The exact opposite of my room. The themes here were black and grey. Black furniture, grey walls, grey and white beddings. The air conditioning was off, but it was so damn cold in here, the air so tight I could hardly breathe. Or it was just the fact that I knew my presence here was wrong. It was much bigger than my room, obviously. And I liked it. I was someone who suffered from nightmares, but paradoxically, the darkness here, was calming.
