Marked by fate
The anxiety doesn’t disappear, but it loosens enough that my body stops bracing quite so hard against it, and for the first time since they wheeled me back in, I don’t feel like I’m drowning in everyone else’s presence.
The door opens again, and a nurse walks in with a tray and something that smells so good my stomach twists in on itself. Zach chuckles at the noise it makes.
She places it on a table by the window, then wheels it over my lap. Taking the lid off, she hands me a spoon.
“Chicken broth soup. Eat it slowly. It’s hot, and rich.”
I nod.
“Thank you.”
