ICE AND ARROGANCE
(Caleb)
My knees felt like they were being driven into the asphalt with every single stride.
The three-mile marker was a bright neon banner stretching across the stone archway of the historic campus quad, but to me, it looked like a mirage shifting in the cold gray fog. The frantic sprint I had forced at the stadium exit ramp had bought me a temporary, desperate lead, but the bill was coming due. The lactic acid in my quads was a searing, liquid fire, and the rattling cough in my chest was growing heavier, threatening to choke off my oxygen entirely.
