As the day wore on, Detective James continued the interrogations, securing false confessions from each thief. He did this with a calm, controlled manner, leaning on them with fabricated evidence and promises that seemed convincing enough to break their spirits. Each confession built a thicker wall of lies, shielding Zagaff’s true involvement.
To the last thief, James said clearly, “This is your last chance to come clean. Admit it, and you’ll have a better outcome.” The thief, defeated and pale, nodded and muttered the same hollow confession as the others.
