The only sound is the hum of the refrigerator and the occasional creak from the old hardwood floors. I slip outside and pull the door closed behind me. The cold air immediately brushes against my skin. Okay. That actually helps. A little. I take a slow breath and look out across the neighborhood. Most of the houses are dark. Streetlights cast pale pools of light across the sidewalks. Everything feels calm. Still. Peaceful. Then I notice someone sitting on the porch next door. Of course. Because apparently the universe hates me. Cole. For a second neither of us says anything.

The walls in this apartment building were paper thin. Every night around eleven, I heard him. Ryan. My neighbor next door. The low rumble of his voice, the rhythmic thump of his bed against the shared wall, and the breathy moans of whatever woman he brought home. I lay in my own bed, hand slipping between my legs, imagining it was me he was fucking so hard.

I wondered. I walked slowly towards the window with my arms wrapped around me. I grabbed the window handles to pull them back to close it but I stopped midway when I noticed the lights next door. Who could that be? The house beside us was empty for over a year. I squinted and could actually see the inside of the room through the window adjoining mine. Like seriously, I could strangle the guy who constructed these houses like that. So damn close! Anyway, we finally got some new neighbours. What an odd time to move in though, I couldn't help but think. I just hope they would be nice. My parents could have some pals.

It wasn't just a feeling though, it was a fact. I earnestly looked forward to our next meeting, but it never came, or at least not as I had expected. However, two weeks after our first encounter, Ms. Ellen appeared at my parents doorstep with a jar of cookies, and a wide smile, introducing herself as our next door neighbour. And then I knew the world was playing tricks on me.

I simply nodded so he wouldn't notice that I was getting lost in my own thoughts again.

Steve nods at me as if to say hi but just keeps walking, still talking with my friends, passing me, like I don’t matter at all. … I’m sitting on my porch swing when I hear a car pull in the driveway next door. I keep my back to the house, hoping if I do, they’ll just disappear. “Hola, Emily!” Brenda calls from next door. It’s not her fault her son is a jerk, so I figure I don’t have an excuse not to reply to her.

Jacob knew this woman well, his next-door neighbour, otherwise known to him as 'that hot MILF next door'. "No? I see." She continued, taking Jacob's stunned silence as a response, "Well... Hi, I'm Mrs Harper. I'm your neighbour from next door. But I guess you already recognised me." Jacob stood awkwardly, unable to speak while his mind internally screamed to start working. "I promised your mother that I'd return this book. Do you mind if I come in?" Mrs Harper chuckled awkwardly as she waved a book at Jacob. "Yes!" Jacob exclaimed in agreement, albeit louder than he expected to, "Yes... Yeah, I know you, Hi"

He stepped ahead to the mailroom entrance and held it open for me, his fingers brushing lightly against my arm as I passed him. My skin warmed instantly at the contact, but the reaction wasn’t sharp like before. It wasn’t hunger. It wasn’t obsession resurfacing. It was awareness. Soft, steady awareness. “Thanks,” I said. “Anytime.” Inside, a few neighbors were chatting quietly. A couple sorting mail. A woman pushing a stroller. And from the open door leading to the courtyard, the smell of something smoky and familiar drifted in. I sniffed the air. “Is that… grilled food?”

Jai was sleeping soundly with Adira in his arms.
