He told Nathaniel he didn’t know how to tell her, not with college just around the corner. Nathaniel had listened, nodded, tried to give advice even though he himself didn’t know what love was supposed to feel like. They talked for a while, and then Ethan left. But Nathaniel wasn’t free yet. That same evening, he was supposed to meet Nigel—Ryan’s older brother—who worked at the Whitmore company. Nigel was a great friend, and had promised to show him a new game after work. Nathaniel had been late because of Ethan, but he still rushed over, hoping Nigel might still be around.

Her gaze softened as she perched beside me on the bed. “Come on, tell me what’s going on. I feel like I’m missing something,” she said quietly. I stared down at my fingers. “There’s so much you’re not telling me,” she continued, her voice soft and almost pleading. “I feel like I’m losing my best friend.” My vision blurred. I blinked once, then twice. Were those tears? What could I possibly tell her? How I’d slept with her brother? Let him fuck me with his fingers? How his girlfriend had insulted me because he told her I was an orphan? How I was struggling to write because he was, somehow, my muse?

SYDNEY I had a strange craving for ice cream. Not any ice cream. Mint with dark chocolate chips. It was my brother's favorite and I personally hated the taste. Just like I had not gotten what I wanted that night. We are brothers. We have the same character. Come with me now, and let this all end,” he said so proudly.

My relaxed, protective brother who was just joking about scaring off Henry Walker is gone. "Where did you get that?" I repeat. My hands are shaking so badly I need somewhere to tuck them into. Noah slowly lowers his phone. He looks at me, his eyes searching mine, trying to piece together a puzzle that he already knows the layout of. This is what I'm afraid of. My brother might be the funniest person in the room, the loudest of the group, but when it comes down to this? To his best friend and almost brother... I'm sure as hell he doesn't play about Enzo.

Anabel asked and the curiosity in her eyes says she's not going to back down unless I say something. At this point, I wanted to tell her everything. I wanted to scream out ‘He's your brother and I'm in love with him.’ But I couldn't, because if I told her, I'd lose her. And I couldn't lose my best friend and as selfish as it is I also don’t want to lose Ethan. He's kind, and charming, and he makes me feel alive. "He’s a young CEO who runs his own investment firm and he's kind and patient. But I'm still figuring things out with him," I eventually said with a forced smile.

Before I can reel and take the words back she smiles at me, and the tension in my chest begins to ease. I’m aware I didn’t ask for her name, though we forgot about that and kept about other things, light topics. She asked if I wanted to talk about my wife and I replied with no. I don’t think I want to talk about Irina with anyone, definitely not a woman I was considering banging. The feeling of guilt whenever I let basic weakness, need, take over has never left. Not after the many years she has been gone. I always feel like I’m betraying her.
