Marrin’s name keeps worming back on to the board no matter how many times I think I’ve pushed him off it.
Gary leans in. “Why are you digging this back up, kid? You wised up and retired before you could get stuck in the mud, didn’t you?”
“Yeah,” I say automatically. And then, because it’s easier than explaining, “Call it unfinished business.”
He studies me for a beat longer, then sits back. “Just remember. Business like this doesn’t stay unfinished without a reason.”
By the time I get back to my apartment, my head’s already half a crime board. I pull the whiteboard out of the closet and start going over the lines, dates and connections again.
