I crouched beside him, my face close to his. “You ever hear of the devil?” I asked. His eyes rolled back slightly, but he nodded. Blood dripped from his mouth. He was slipping. “Good,” I said, standing up again. “Tell him I said hi.” Then I twisted the blade straight into his heart. His body jerked once. And then it went still. Blood dripped from my hands, my clothes, even my boots. The dungeon was quiet now. No more begging. No more cries. Just silence.

I murmured, twisting harder, smiling, “Sing for me, Father. Sing for your sins.” I grinned wider, enjoying the spectacle, the delicious irony of a priest, a supposed man of God, trembling before a man like me—a devil incarnate. I crouched down and faced him, “If it makes you feel any better, I promise I’ll pray for your soul. After all, I hear the Devil loves a good sinner.”
