LOGINWhen Isla’s family is brutally wiped out one night, she’s left with nothing but blood on her hands and a whispered name: Lorenzo. He’s known in the underworld for being ruthless, cunning, and untouchable, but instead of hating him, Isla runs straight into his arms. Lorenzo takes her in, feeds her lies, and wraps her up in silk chains. He claims nothing and promises less, but he becomes everything to her, just how he wants it. The deeper Isla falls into his world, the more she questions what’s real – her rage, her grief, or the twisted attraction between them. “You can run, Isla,” Lorenzo tells her, brushing her hair from her face. “But the world won’t love you like I do.”

~•~ I was immersed in my show when the door to my room suddenly opened. My eyes traveled to the door at the same time my mother saw me on the bed. Her eyes went wide, as though she had been caught doing something she wasn’t supposed to be doing. That only lasted a few seconds. Her expression transformed from guilty to stern in a matter of seconds. “What are you doing at home, Lala? Aren’t you supposed to be in school?” I grinned sheepishly. “Lala!” “Come on, Mom. I’m in my final year. It’s fine to skip a few classes.” My parents had my school schedule and they knew I had classes all day long. I wasn’t supposed to be home until seven in the evening but when I realized how long I would spend in college today, I decided not to go and preferred to rot in bed instead. As a result, I didn’t bother leaving my room all day long and survived on the snacks I kept in my drawer. “Lala…” “Last time, I promise. I’ll go to class tomorrow.” She sighed. “You better do,” she said and turned around to leave. I was about to put my headphones on again, but I paused. “By the way, what were you looking for in my room?” I hadn’t bothered to lock the door because I didn’t think anyone would try to come in. “I was going to do the laundry.” She faced me again. “You did that two days ago, Mom.” “So you haven’t worn any more clothes since then?” Her tone was sarcastic and that was enough to shut me up. “Come to think of it, you’re old enough to do your own laundry yet you sit around waiting for me.” I facepalmed. I shouldn’t have asked her anything. She was going to whine about it for the rest of the week and it was only Monday. “Kids these days are ungrateful. They can never–“ “I’m sorry, Mom. I won’t question how efficiently you work anymore. You’re the best mother in the world and anyone, including me, who questions it is a fool.” My mother smiled and stopped her rant. “I won’t disturb you but if you have dirty clothes, bring them down to the laundry room.” “Yes ma’am.” With that, she left. We had a lot of workers in our house. We had help for everything; cooking, cleaning, doing dishes, doing the laundry, gardening, and whatever else anyone could think of, but my mother was a chore fanatic. She liked to do things herself and the workers were only there to help her. She wasn’t a typical mafia wife, who just shopped for fun, knew how to use a gun, and bragged about how many things their husband owned. She never indulged herself in the things of the mafia and left it all to my dad and elder brother. She also raised me to stay away from their business which was why despite the family I came from, I still didn’t know how to use a gun. At first, I was bitter about the fact that my mom didn’t want me to learn but as time went on, I realized she was making the right decision for me. She didn’t want my hands to be stained with blood and I appreciated that. Besides, even if I was trained, there wasn’t much I could do to help. I was raised in a mafia household but I had the most normal life my mother could give me. About five minutes after my mother left my room, the door was opened again. I gritted my teeth in annoyance when I saw that it was my brother. I instinctively threw a pillow at him. “Have you ever heard of knocking? Is that a foreign term to you?” He dodged the pillow smoothly, allowing it to hit the floor behind him and fall to the ground. “Mom said you skipped your classes so I’m here to teach you the importance of attendance.” “Fuck off, you’re one to talk?” My parents were quite heavy on us getting a degree, despite the nature of our family and my brother did not like that. He missed so many classes that he almost failed. He didn’t care what he graduated with as long as he graduated. He had no right to lecture me on attendance. “What’s that supposed to mean?” “It means you should get out of my room and let me enjoy my show in peace!” Casper rolled his eyes but took the hint and left me alone. My brother and I were four years apart but we were still very close. He made it his life’s mission to annoy me when he wasn’t busy trading contraband goods. Happy that he had left, I stood up from my bed and locked my room door, not wanting any more disturbance. I connected my laptop to my headphones and continued watching my show. Almost an hour later, I heard a faint cry, but I ignored it, then I heard it again. This time, I removed my headphones and focused on the sound. Almost a minute passed before I heard it again. This time, it was louder and I could recognize that voice anywhere. Living in a mafia household, it wasn’t unusual to get raided which was why my senses were on high alert. I closed my laptop at once and exited my room. I was careful with my steps as I could now hear more sounds. My brother was letting out pained groans every few seconds, making me wonder what the hell was happening. My breathing was laboured but I tried to make as little noise as possible as I approached the staircase. I only had to take one step down when I came face to face with the craziest scene. There were a lot of unfamiliar men in my home. Two men each were holding my brother, my mother, my father, and my father’s right-hand man. Even worse, some of our men were already lying lifeless on the ground. I almost gasped but I placed my hand around my mouth, stifling any sounds as one of the men continued to punch my brother in the stomach. “Why are you doing this?” My father. “We don’t have any beef with you!” The man responsible for punching my brother laughed. “I know, but we only follow our boss’s orders.” Their boss? For them to be able to break into our house, their boss had to be very powerful. “Mr Russo’s order is that none of you should come out alive.” He added. “None.” Russo? There was only one Russo in this city, but we were on good terms with them. There was no way Lorenzo Russo would order the killing of my family. Maybe he was just trying to scare us. Was my father currently doing any business with him? I was dead wrong though. “And I’m going to start with you.” Right before my eyes, the man turned around and pointed a gun at my father, and before anyone could process it, he pulled the trigger. I screamed.ISLA~•~Sleep evaded me that night. I hated it.His words weighed down on me so that every time I closed my eyes, my mind replayed that conversation. His tone, the way his gaze darkened when he said he wanted me. He hadn’t even hesitated. I had thought anger would burn the memory away but it didn’t. It made it worse. It bothered me.By the time dawn came, I gave up trying to sleep. My head was heavy but my chest was worse. I couldn’t tell the difference between anger, confusion, and attraction anymore. So I did the only thing I could when my thoughts got too loud.I threw on my workout clothes and left my room quietly. The hallways were still dark, so I expected everyone else to be sleeping. I didn’t think I’d run into anyone, but halfway down the stairs, a voice stopped me.“Isla?”Ricardo was standing at the foot of the stairs with his hands in his pockets. His shirt was wrinkled, like he had just gotten up. Now that I knew about his relationship with Greg, I could see some similar
ISLA~•~For a second, I wasn’t sure I heard him right.I stared at him, waiting for him to laugh and take it back. After all, it seemed like all he did was fuck with my head anyway. But he didn’t. He just stood there, his gaze fixed on me, waiting for me to respond to him.“You can’t just say things like that,” I managed to say, my throat suddenly dry.His gaze flicked over my face. “Why not?”I blinked. He wasn’t teasing. He was serious. He came and went as he liked. He said whatever he felt like saying. It annoyed me. “Because you have no right.” I hissed out.I had spent the last few weeks trying to get him out of my head. I had put all my time and focus on training and school. I didn’t leave any space for thoughts about Lorenzo, especially with all the secrets he carried. I was conflicted when it came to him. I didn’t know whether to give in or not. I didn’t know whether to demand the truth or not. Everything about him confused me which was why I stopped thinking about him.He ti
LORENZO~•~I had no intention of avoiding Isla when I came back, but it just happened. She was angry. That much I could tell. I could see it in the way she looked at me whenever we passed each other in the hallways. In the way she ate quickly whenever I was around. I couldn’t even blame her.I’d left without telling her and when she confronted me about it, my words had been harsh. It was only right for her to be mad at me.Besides, her anger was doing her good. In the month I was away, her stamina and core strength had improved. Her stance was great and she had learnt a few reliable strikes. She wasn’t perfect but with the way she was spending all of her time training, it wouldn’t be long before she would be.Even when Lucia wasn’t teaching her, she was practicing on her own. I wanted to interfere, but I wasn’t certain she would even listen to me.Regardless, I found my feet leading me to the training grounds. She wasn’t in her room nor was she in the study. I’d also checked the gym
ISLA~•~In the month Lorenzo was away, I’d made a lot of progress on training. I could throw knives now. My throws weren’t precise but it still stuck to the target. My punch could hurt even if it could easily be blocked and I was just starting to learn how to use guns. Aside from training, I’d been very busy with school. Exams had been tough but without Lorenzo around to distract me, I was almost sure I’d been acing them.It was my final paper and I was feeling pretty good about it. I was tired of school. At first, I looked forward to it because it was the last piece of normalcy I had left but after Lorenzo’s life also bled onto that, I hated the place. I didn’t have any friends. Sophia had completely abandoned me. Ryan said hi to me now and then, but without Sophia there to continue the conversation with him, our talks were very short. He still flirted with me whenever he couldn’t but he couldn’t keep talking to an unresponsive person.I couldn’t even blame him.I had just stepped
LORENZO ~•~ The first few days blurred. Work filled up the spaces she used to occupy. There were endless reports, endless calls, and endless files spread across my desk. I went through them one after the other, only stopping to eat or sleep. It worked for a while. Until it didn’t. The house was quiet. Too quiet in my opinion. I’d only brought two men along with me since I never planned to stay this long. I used to like quiet places until I came across Isla who didn’t fail to talk back whenever she could. “Boss,” Romano's voice interrupted my thoughts. I looked up at him. “The container had been cleared. They’re waiting for your approval to send it out.” I nodded, giving him the go-ahead. Romano was able to handle most businesses by himself but he always liked to report to me first. “Double the surveillance when it lands. Nikolai has his eye on my goods.” I’d crossed paths with Nikolai once after Isla’s birthday. He seemed to think I owed him for humiliating his brother. I coul
ISLA ~•~ Lorenzo has been avoiding me. At least, that was how it felt. After my first session with Lucia, I hardly saw him around the house. Normally, I’d catch glimpses of him in the hallway or the kitchen, but for the past few days, it was like he had disappeared completely. I was usually the one avoiding him and whenever I didn’t go out of my way to make sure we didn’t cross paths, we always did. Greg said he was busy but that wasn’t exactly new information. Lorenzo was always busy but there was a difference between being busy and being gone. By Thursday, I was done pretending his absence didn’t bother me. Apparently, he’d been snappy with everyone lately, but I would prefer it if he snapped at me rather than completely ignoring me. It wasn’t like I missed him or anything. I just… didn’t like not knowing why he was radio silent. A small insecure part of me thought it was because he had gotten what he wanted. It was very small but it existed anyway. He’d been teasin
