At some point it felt as though I’d ordered a catalogue just to see his screwed up face until I reached into the later part of the file. Now I was looking at his history. Damien .D. Born on the 19th of May, 1991 in North Carolina. No known siblings. Surprisingly he seemed to have gone to some of the best prestigious schools, but nothing here gave exactly what we were looking for. My phone began to ring again. Phil. “Hey, there’s nothing more than background stuff here. Sure you got the right intel?” “Yeah man, forgot to mention that we’d be visiting one of his schools. Apparently they should have more information on him.”

"He won't be interested in me, but we can be friends." She gave his number to Joanna. Later, something came to her mind, and she checked the calendar on her cellphone. Upon seeing the numbers on the calendar, she paused for a moment. This explained Damian's odd expression; tomorrow was Justin's birthday.

“How lovely it is to hear your voice again” Damiens brow furrowed. “Is this the prick who collected your number yesterday?” “He's the prick who fixed my tires,” I whispered, my voice laced with sarcasm. “Are you busy today?” He asked. “Yes, why?” “Aww, that's too bad. I wanted us to meet up for a drink,” Wayne said. I gazed at Damien. “I'm sorry I'm a bit tight today “Can you at least squeeze me in?” he asked. “You owe me one, remember?”

“Thank you, you remember that today is my birthday. But, why did you have to send me congratulations from my old cell phone? I'm touched by your surprise this time honey! Thank you!" I didn't refuse Damian's huge, because that's natural, isn't it? However, I clearly don't remember when Damian's birthday is. In fact, I didn't even text the guy. Come on, I also just met Damian because of what happened to me. I just don't have time to know the old number. Too much time wasted on that nothing special. But, because it was Damian's birthday. I didn't want to spoil the guy's mood, so I went along with it as best I could.

She wasn’t sure if it was just her imagination, but something felt different tonight. Lyla was sitting at the opposite end of the table, her eyes glinting as she looked around. She seemed too calm, too collected. And then, as if on cue, she spoke up. “Damian,” Lyla said, her voice sweet yet with an underlying edge. “Did you know my birthday is coming up in two days?” Damian didn’t even look up from his plate. “In advance,” he said, his voice uninterested, as though he’d already heard the news.

"By the way I heard something about you.” Damien’s eyes rose from his plate, a thread of wariness curling across his face. "Oh? Should I be worried?” Sophia leaned in curiosity flickering across her face. "Now this should be good.” Ella's grin widened. "I caught wind that it's your birthday week.” I snapped my head toward Damien eyebrows shooting up. "Wait—what? Is that true?” He hesitated, giving Ella a dead‑pan look that still betrayed his amusement. ". Who told you that?”

The Queen turned to the King, her mouth opening to argue, but his raised hand silenced her. Damien’s shadow fell over me as he crouched slightly, his voice low enough for only me to hear. “Don’t look, little flame,” he murmured, the words gentle despite the tension in his tone. “You don’t need to see this.” The trapdoors fell with a sickening thud. My father, my mother, my brother—gone. A scream tore from my throat, raw and uncontrollable. I collapsed to the ground, my legs giving out beneath me. I didn’t need to see it; the sound alone was enough to shatter what was left of my heart.

I knew it was not the right time for the question, but I wanted a clear explanation. “I…” She sat on the bed, and I went and sat next to her. “He was always working; he would come to bed late, sometimes sleep in the office; he even once forgot my birthday,” she sadly chuckled. “I mean, he...he made a reservation at a restaurant but ended up forgetting; I had to celebrate it alone.” She wiped tears that leaked from the corners of her eyes, and I nodded, understanding her pain. Damian never cared about my birthday and even though our cases were different I couldn't help but relate. “I had to take him off; I thought if he focused on other cases, he might relax a bit…”

We ordered while he filled our water glasses, and waited until he disappeared again before the silence settled back between us. My fingers traced the condensation on my glass. “That week feels like it happened to different people.” Damien laughed softly. “It kind of does.” I looked up. “It was your birthday.” His smile faded slightly. “Yeah.” “And we spent most of it fighting.” “I deserved that.” I raised an eyebrow, leaning back in my chair. “That’s a first.” That earned a real laugh from him. “I’ve had three months to think about it.” I smiled despite myself. Damien kept his eyes on me then leaned back in his chair, hesitating for a second.

Damian I'm sitting here in my MC, the Devils Army, nursing a beer when my VP and best friend Brody walks in with his newest woman of the week. Candy? Brandy? Tammy? Hell I don't know. She wont be here next week anyway. He always does this. Finds a woman who pretends to love him and all that he’s worth and then in a week or two he finds her with some other brother in the club.
