Dante had set the whole of Zestonia in uproar, rallying up rebellion and calling other humans to his cause. It was amazing to see so many humans come together. But it was terrifying to see them all under Dante’s control. He didn’t seek to free them. He wanted to use them, to draw attention to himself and he hoped that his uprising would spark more uprisings in other regions. It was diabolically clever and it’s what I would have done if I was Dante.

Dante pours himself another glass. “Fuck,” Nico says, leaning on the armrest of his wheelchair with his hand in front of his mouth as well. Sylvana was the only one who looked confused. “How is this important?” She asks, not understanding the actual importance this information held. Dante takes a swig of his glass. “The Burning of The Muratori Heirs. It is a blemish on the Dragonetti name, an event that never should have happened and cemented me as an unfeeling bastard.” He finishes another glass. Nico and I looked at one another and frowned in confusion.

Miguel sauntered through the doors as if he owned the place angering Dante immediately, Dante, my good friend, it is good to see you, how is your little woman, still playing at being a Don is she? Dante gritted his teeth and snarled back, ‘What Gabriella does is nothing to you or your kin do you understand me?’

Dante’s POV The smell of gunpowder clung to the folds of Dante’s coat like a curse he couldn’t wash off. He stood in the smoldering ruins of the eastern wing of the Marcello estate, marble statues cracked and blackened, the once-pristine floor littered with brass shells and broken pride. Fire still licked the edges of the main hallway, a furious echo of the rage seething beneath his skin. He’d come to end her rebellion with precision. But she’d slipped through his fingers again.

After a week of severe injuries, the Vallenis announced the death of their leader. Dante took over. Many expected him to remain his impulsive, paranoid self, but he had changed. Dante was more calculative. After his father’s death, he reinstated the “eye for an eye” rule and tightened his grip on Italy. Every ticking illegal business breathing in Italy was under the supervision of the Vallenis. They had grown stronger, wealthier, and scarier under Dante. The impulsive Dante everyone once knew was now the opposite—and believe me, that was even scarier. It was still him, but in a more commanding way. He didn’t raise his voice anymore. He didn’t have to.

He runs his tongue over his lower teeth. I frown. “I know he sent men into Italian territory.” “Who—” Dante shakes his head. “Don’t tell me. Keep the men you earned. Yes, he crossed territory lines, but not personally, and I knocked their teeth in. Business is the line that starts a war.” I squeeze his hands gently. “Business or personal.” Dante looks down at me, some of his bravado melting away. “Yes.” I tagged the Irish Kings last week as a potential problem. They have more men than us and a share of the city that rivals what we gained from killing Luca. And a history of making impulsive, dangerous choices.

Caterina was silent. "Now we focus on your recovery first." Dante spoke softly. Caterina nodded. Dante took off the shirt that was attached to his body. He put the shirt on his daughter's body to cover Caterina's naked body. Dante's jaw tightened; he clenched his fists very tightly as he brought destruction to his daughter's world. He should never have brought Caterina to live there. He should have left La Vendetta first so he could focus on taking care of his daughter and planning a good future for her.
