Someone who won’t let you throw yourself into danger alone.” The words hit too deep, scraping against the walls I tried to build. “You don’t know what I need.” He tilted his head, gaze never leaving mine. “Don’t I?” Before I could answer, the sound of howls shattered the night. Not the steady calls of patrols. These were feral, wild, violent. The unmistakable chorus of rogues. Lucian’s head snapped toward the sound, his entire body tense in an instant. “They’re here.” Adrenaline surged through me. My hand went for the dagger strapped to my thigh. “Then let’s go.”

Firefighters from the city scrambled uselessly while Dante’s men tried to establish a perimeter, their guns glinting under the firelight. “Madonna…” one of the lieutenants muttered, crossing himself as the inferno devoured what used to be their stronghold. Dante stood still, his black coat billowing in the acrid wind. His face was carved from stone, eyes reflecting the flames. Third-Person POV The flames shot toward the sky. Lina, whom Dante had left behind, was swallowed up by the blazing fire within seconds. The report slipped from Dante's fingers as he stiffly turned around and looked at the sea of fire that was devoid of any human silhouettes. The Underboss' statement about the death of Lina's Padre, Giacomo Vittori, seemed to overlap with the reality that Lina had also perished in the explosion. Something seemed to snap within Dante's mind, causing him to spit out a mouthful of blood. He let out an anguished howl before he fell to his knees among the burning debris.
