The night stretched long and silent over Ashwood, broken only by the purr of engines. Violet sat beside Kael inside the black Rolls-Royce Cullinan, her reflection caught in the tinted glass — pale face, faint glow of her violet eyes flickering each time lightning danced across the distant peaks. Two matte-black G-Wagons followed — one ahead, one behind — carrying Draven wolves, their presence grim and wordless, as if carved from the night itself.

It sizzled, rejecting the offering like spit on a hot spider. "Damn it!" Vida screamed, sweeping a stack of crystals off the table. They shattered on the floor. "It won't take the blood! It's locked!" "Then unlock it," Daxon growled from the fireplace. He was leaning against the mantle, nursing a tumbler of bourbon that he was refilling for the third time in an hour. His shirt was unbuttoned at the top, revealing the angry red scar of the blood rune on his chest. He looked like a man holding onto sanity by his fingernails.

said Crimson to Violet. "I took it to the precinct." They turned to find that the woman was no longer on the ground. "Crimson, look out!" Violet cried before shoving him to the side and Crimson watched while his female counterpart got blasted by a bolt of lightning that was intended for him. Her body suddenly burst into a wave of purple light. "Violet, no!" Crimson dashed to where she had been standing but there was nothing there except for the purple haze that still glowed from the aftermath of the blast.
