I pointed at the desk “The book earlier. Can I take it?" Nicholas grabbed the book "You didn't tell me you were into these kind of genre. Crime and thriller?"

“Yours? Or just your latest obsession? Because obsessions… they burn out, Nickolai. And when they do, men like you always destroy the very thing you claim to love.” Nickolai’s grip tightened, his knuckles whitening. “Stop!” I screamed, shoving myself between them, my palms pressing against Nickolai’s chest. His heartbeat thundered beneath my hands, erratic, dangerous. “You’re going to kill him. And then what? Drag his corpse out in front of your partners? You’ll lose everything you’ve built.” For a split second, reason flickered in Nickolai’s blazing eyes. Slowly, reluctantly, he released Umar, letting him slump against the stall.

Now that they were dead, chaos had erupted in the Nichols family. David attacked the remaining Nichols family members who were masters in the Dragon Rank, and in doing so basically defeated all the people the Nichols family had sent out.

I smoothed the paper again and brought it back to the drawer. Again and again, I was still trying to find something. I stood up from the chair and walked over to the shelf with a few books. Something I had never seen from Nicholas because he always collected so many books in his office, in his home in Long Island, in his apartment, and in his room in the Dolomites. The titles seen on the spine of the books made me frown once again; they were the titles of novels that were always sold cheaply. I didn't expect them to be here. Is this his office?

The stitches were still there, beneath the bandage—somehow, by some miracle, I hadn’t popped any that night we had chased the drug dealer down—but they were beginning to itch, and Jade had made me promise that I wouldn’t give in to the temptation. Norval's eyes glowed, much to Wardric's surprise, as if Norval had been expecting it. The two circled each other, plotting out their next moves and scouting each other’s arsenal. Wardric eventually took action, flipping open the book, which stayed suspended in mid-air as he raised both arms, periodically looking down at the book and flashing his fingers around in a mystical motion. A feeling that this afternoon was different, even though the world gave no signs. Maybe it was because the outside sounds weren’t as loud as usual. Maybe because David hadn’t contacted me. Or maybe because I was starting to truly feel alone, even though the shadows in this room still kept me company. I reached for a book on the table. Opened it, and began reading something I had written a few days ago. About David. Again. David, Daniel, Dr. John, Liam, Mr. Jimmy and his wife, as well as Carlos and other killers, all clearly written in my book. They were all connected. Had one purpose, like an organization.

“What did David say to you at the party?” I should have known he would circle back to it. Nicholas was many things. Forgetful had never been one of them. “Nothing worth repeating.” He gave me a look that made it clear he was not in the mood for soft answers. “Try again.” I reached for the toast just to buy myself a second. “He asked about the drug and the company. He talked too much. End of story.” Nicholas said nothing. I didn’t want Nicholas involved in that. David was the kind of man who could drop poison into a conversation and walk away smiling while everybody else swallowed it slowly. Maybe he had lied or guessed.

That’s when he laughs. And everything fractures. THE NIGHT I DIED I remember now. All of it. Not pieces. Not echoes. Everything. They didn’t just capture me. They hunted me.
