He says nothing. The door closes. He stands in the hallway for sixty seconds. He counts them, standing on the closed side of the door, the way he has counted everything, and the counting is not hope and it is not despair and it is not strategy. It is simply what he does while he is deciding what the correct behavior is in a hallway outside a closed door, and what he arrives at, at the end of the sixty seconds, is that there is no correct behavior available to him here except the one that acknowledges that the door closed and the door was hers to close.

Resistance learning how to breathe. I felt my throat tighten. This wasn’t what I wanted. This wasn’t what I planned. But it was real. I stepped forward again, heart hammering. “Listen to me,” I shouted. “This is not about defying orders for the sake of it.” I pointed toward the armored vehicles.
