I run as fast as I can. When I felt like I was no longer chased by that guy, I lean on a wall and relax. God, why are all of these happening so suddenly? I almost jumped on my feet when I was in a corner by a guy I met earlier. He's leaning closer to me, he smells so nice, it's a mix of mint and smoke. So all this time he's smoking? He's hella stunning! He's so handsome with his thick eyebrows and pointed nose. I must say that he's freaking rich by the watch on his wrist and the way his tuxedo perfectly suits his body. He leans closer to me and smells the side of my lips. My heart is beating so fast.

“You look terrible. What happened?” After seeing Lysa got devoured by a man who was not Vincentio in the middle of the forest, I ran back to the hall and knocked back a few glasses of champagne, trying to erase the image from my eyes. I had been walking mindlessly around the place since then and that’s when Vincentio grabbed me. “Oh I was just- just looking around, you know,” I chuckled nervously, avoiding his eyes. “Like to stroll around? Yeah, I’m familiar with the concept,” he said dryly, “I’ve been searching all over. I guess it’s an oversight on my part. I should have saved your number. Give me your phone.”

I couldn’t afford to. The echo of my footsteps was drowned out by the doctor’s frantic shouts. "Stop her! Someone stop her!" he cried, his voice tinged with desperation. But I didn’t listen. I couldn’t. My feet moved faster than my mind, each step a blur beneath me as my heart thudded wildly in my chest, pushing me forward with a determination that left no room for hesitation.

Just those words had me quivering, already desperate for him to ravage me into oblivion. Before I could even catch my breath, I was suddenly lifted with ease as Jacob had me pinned underneath him on the bed, his weight crushing me into his bed. The feral glint in his eyes made my core throb with pure exhilaration. “So desperate for me, aren’t you?” he growled against the fevered skin of my neck, his teeth grazing over his mark possessively. I whimpered shamelessly, arching my body against the rigid planes of his in silent supplication.

“And where will you go, Max? You don’t even know where she is.” His words struck too close to truth. I stiffened. He was right—I didn’t know. My chest tightened with helpless fury. “Then I’ll find out,” I snapped. “I’ll tear apart every inch of this land until I do.” He exhaled, long and slow, as though bearing the weight of my madness. His voice lowered, honeyed with false reason. “You can’t let desperation lead you astray. You’re no good to her broken, chasing shadows.”

I didn’t wait. I ran. Through the courtyard. Past stunned faces. Past murmuring wolves. And then I saw them. Chase walking. Supporting someone. Someone taller. Stronger. Barely conscious. Kaelric. His shirt was soaked in blood. His skin pale. Too pale. For one terrible heartbeat— I thought I was too late. Chase’s eyes lifted. And I saw something flicker there. Expectation. As if he thought I would run to him. As if he thought I would hesitate.

Pulling off my hoodie, I climb into bed, readjusting the pillows, muttering, “If anyone had peeked in, they would have thought I had grown humps in my sleep.” “Thash’ nice,” Beth mumbles, yanking the blanket over her head. Muttering a chosen curse word, I huddle under the blanket, allowing myself to drift off. *** It’s dark and raining. I don’t like the dark. “Taylor! Taylor!” The voice is so familiar but try as I might, I can’t get these chains off me. They’re weighing me down as the frightened voice calls out my name with a desperation that tears into me. She needs me.

And Zara was the prey. I shoved a terrified sophomore out of the way, ignoring the way he shrieked when I did. My boots slammed against the tile, echoing like war drums. My heart wasn’t beating—it was battering, hammering, threatening to tear its way out of me as I tore through classrooms, down staircases, checking every corner. “Zara!” I barked, my voice raw, cracking with something I never let anyone hear: desperation. But no answer came. I didn’t want to think about why.

I pushed harder, the air sharp in my lungs, my eyes fixed on his back, focused, determined. The man’s breaths were coming in quick, ragged gasps now, but his desperation only fueled me. He wasn’t getting away. Not while I was this close. I rounded the corner of a building, sprinting down the alley, the darkness swallowing me whole.
