He paused for effect, then concluded, “Marrying one of their daughters would secure peace for decades to come. No whisper of rebellion could arise, not without kin betraying kin.”
Murmurs rose again, this time stronger.
“True words.”
“A wise course for a lasting reign.”
“For the future of Tziyonia.”
Samarth’s hand, on the armrest, tightened into a fist. His face betrayed nothing.
Raj, in rare boldness, stepped forward slightly and spoke, voice low but clear,
“Perhaps it would be best to first bind the kingdom wholly, sire. Let all roots be firm before grafting new branches.”
It was a feeble attempt to shield Samarth, and all there knew it.
