Sarah yelped out loud, while I fell to the floor. My ears buzzed, but I caught a glimpse of the loud noise.

I sighed. "Told you. You shouldn't have smoked that thing." I called an ambulance. I heard later that the old Don had a heart attack and a stroke at the same time. They saved his life, but he was left in a vegetative state. The doctor said they could keep him on life support and hope for a miracle. Or pull the plug.

He looked past me, through the open door, at the chaos outside—at the Dragon-Rowan tearing through the porcelain Angels. "He's very loud, isn't he?" The Author sighed. "I told the Aethel-Corp that the 'Donor' model was too unstable. But they wanted 'Emotional Depth.'" He turned the notebook toward me. On the page was a drawing of a girl and a boy. They were standing in a field of real flowers, under a real sun. "I can send you there," the man said. "But only one of you can go. The 'Real World' doesn't have room for a 'Beast.' He has too much 'Data.' He would crash the 'Reality' of a normal life."

Then, engaging his left hand, he ruffled her fine hair with careless affection, leaving her damp curls entirely disheveled. He let out a low, gravelly chuckle. "You're overthinking it, little swan. It has nothing to do with your pastries." "Tonight, a blind, oversized lizard attempted to breach my vault and seize my capital. I simply crushed it into the concrete. The creature merely possessed a rigid spine, causing a minor fracture in my armor when the blow landed." Dorothea blinked, processing the structural metaphor with absolute seriousness. The leader was in silver armor, and he looked unspeakably majestic—it was Ambrose. His cronies stood behind him. Woo!
