“It’s a umbrella for you. Butterfly wings are big enough to keep out the rain.” Jenny took the piece of paper in her hands. The paper made a “rustling” sound as it moved between her fingers. The crayon colors left marks on her fingerprints—pink, blue, brown, green—standing out sharply against her pale skin. She looked down at the butterfly. Its wings were pink, with asymmetrical patterns: three dots on the left wing and two on the right. The butterfly’s body was brown, and its antennae were blue, bending to form two question-mark-shaped arcs on the paper.

“Get this thing off of me!” But I could not look away from the sky. The swirling shapes, dancing around one another in circles, their wings spread out wide. Their tails long and tapered, following behind them like serpents. And more frightening than anything, the fire that spilled from their mouths. Mouths full of dozens of sharp, wet teeth. Dragons.

I noticed from the corner of my eyes that the whole hall was now watching what I was. It yanked it's hand out of her chest and pretty blue dress, bringing out of it a red pumping organ. Her heart. She fell to the floor motionless and it squished her heart in its fist and dropped it to the floor beside her in a thump. It raised it's bloody hand and I could make out that it licked it's palm. "The Draekien..." Morpheus whispered beside me. I sucked in a breath as it moved and something dark fluttered in its wake. Are those.... wings?! I didn't have much time to ponder on it as the thing finally spoke.

He moved it from one side to the other, making sounds that seemed to be moans. Slowly he climbed higher and higher flapping his wings. Taryn watched, on the ground, the dragon covered in blood-red scales with gold hues, on her head the black horns, scarlet and golden wings flapping furiously as the dragon returned to the sky, moving away from them.

My excited roar carried across the night sky, I flapped my wings a little harder to keep myself airborne and didn't really want to be crashing down to the earth on my first flight! Dragus and Darian were next to me hoovering next to me, their wings as wide as two trucks, one gold one silver. They looked magnificent. I couldn't help but let my eyes trail over their dragons bodies, their scales as hard as granite but moving freely with their movements. They were incredible.

"Xia, one day, I’ll buy a Goldenwing Dragon just to show you." Goldenwing Dragons, like Silverwing Dragons, have immense wings that blot out the sky and tails longer than their own bodies. But because they are the finest aerial mounts, they are much larger than Silverwings and extremely rare. Their price is astronomical, and only royalty or titled individuals can afford them.

I clamped my mouth shut, not wanting Troy to hear my teeth chattering. It looked like we were going to fly to the moon. Troy opened his wings wide and the moonlight allowed me to see that Troy's dragon scales were bronze, like the color of a new penny. His wings were light copper, and the tips were silver. He'd been awesome in the dark, but in the light? His tail meandered behind him like a giant snake and his wings, like those of a giant bat, beat against the night air. He was amazing. A giggle snuck out of me. It was the happiest I'd been in more than a month.

The first time I saw Damien cry, it was over a paper crane. We were in the sun-room of the penthouse, the one I’d quietly claimed as my studio. Morning light pooled through floor-to-ceiling windows, painting everything gold. I’d pushed the furniture aside so I could spread a ten-foot canvas on the parquet. The painting was almost finished: a riot of indigo and violet wings, a cocoon splitting open, a small figure stepping out. My mother’s butterfly, reborn.

I’ve pinched myself three times already and I’m still here. The dragon before me is a sight to behold. Dragons don’t exist and that’s how I know I’m dreaming. Its scales are a deep shimmering blue, like the depths of the ocean. Its eyes, a brilliant golden hue and its wings are so large they seem to stretch across the sky. The dragon’s long neck curves gracefully and its tail swishes back and forth in a hypnotic rhythm.

She had watched as they set everything ablaze, their massive wings fanning the flames as they burned the brightness and vibrancy of existence into nothingness. Now, a black splotch of scorched acreage, lying dead. Yet, something about them had her intrigued. She had to admit, she was impressed given their size, how they moved with such grace and elegance, as if they were the true rulers of life and death. How they stayed at just the right height as they maneuvered through the sky, swooping in and out as if they were playing a child’s game of chase with smoke and fire. She watched as intelligence swam behind the eyes of the dragon that had found her, yet never gave her away.
