When I open my eyes again, I know exactly where I am, instinctively. The dream world. The familiar, unsettling dark path stretches quietly in front of me, endless and beckoning. I start walking immediately, compelled forward. Malakai’s dreamscape appears briefly to my left, but it’s nothing but ruins now—burned-out memories, shattered dreams, and completely dead magic. He is truly gone. I pass it and continue deeper into the void. Whispers start first. Then soft, mournful crying. Cages materialize, lining the path on both sides. People are trapped inside, curled up in fear. Some of them are immediately recognizable faces from Silver Lake. The souls caught under the horrific sleeping plague.

To distract myself I grabbed a stack of books i had gotten from Zoya. I settled on the bed, curling up with the first book. It was a fantasy novel about a brave healer and her quest to save a cursed kingdom. I couldn’t help but smile at the irony but as I turned the pages, I found myself getting invested. The healer’s struggles, her triumphs and her quiet strength it all resonated with me. Just as the story began to pull me in, a knock sounded at the door. Before I could respond, it opened and my three mates walked in. I let out a quick breath because what in beautiful world are these creatures from? I’m always blown by their presence.

Chapter 24 Kayla's POV When we finally stopped at the hotel, I was so relieved. I was exhausted after being on the road for so long. Don’t get me wrong, I like to travel, but dang, an eighteen-hour drive just wears you out. Dad had gotten everyone their own room, so I got to relax by myself. I like it that way. Taking a shower, I started to relax, drifting off to sleep. I began having this weird dream: I was running with a pack of wolves. I didn’t know where we were going until we stopped in front of other wolves that had red eyes, drooling out the mouth. There was something wrong with them, I thought. But then suddenly, they backed away, bowing their heads at us.

While I'm changing, Flavius wanders around the room, lightly brushing his fingers across the many bookshelves I have carved out of the mountain wall. "When I thought of your room, I never thought of so many books. I thought it would be full of weapons and armor," he says jokingly. "I love to read, honestly," I respond. "I’m surprised, though; you even have books written in other languages," he remarks. "There is a lot of great literature that came from the elves and the fae. As a dragon, I am fluent in all languages. I only have to hear the language once, and I can speak it," I tell him nonchalantly.
