Morning came as a thin blade of light under the curtains, a pale slice across the stone floor that smelled faintly of smoke and cypress. I was already half-awake, the way you are after a night spent guarding someone you love—resting, but never surrendered. Dax paced the borders of my mind like a sentry on the ridge-line, tail flicking, ears up. Outside, Crescent breathed in tired shifts: boot falls along the corridor, the soft clatter of enamel basins from the infirmary wing, low voices whetted by grief and duty.
