At the bottom of the shelf, though, were a handful of romance novels—in English, no less. I pulled out a historical romance by a favorite author of mine. I hadn’t read this one, and I’d already finished the one romance I’d brought with me. I was a total bore and preferred to read printed books still. Probably because they smelled nice. If e-readers could let out a puff of new-book scent, though, I’d buy one in a heartbeat. “The Seduction of Miss Emily Morris,” Olivier read over my shoulder. “That rather gives the plot away, no?”

The bell rang. Jane was stuffing A Tale of Two Cities into her backpack when she heard Lucy's voice beside her. "You're reading Dickens?" Jane nodded warily. "Oh, I love Dickens. Have you read David Copperfield? Or Oliver Twist? Olive Twist is my favorite. I've read it twice. I cried both times. I can't believe someone else in our class is reading Dickens." To her dismay, Jane found herself walking down the hall to English with Lucy by her side, still talking, talking, talking.

“Because I do. Most of these modern book relationships don’t make sense. They wouldn’t work in real life. He’s toxic and she’s too naive, but hey, their s*x scenes are terrific and at this point, that’s all I’m here for.” I sighed deeply. What was with my mouth lately? I was no longer thinking before speaking. “So I’m guessing you prefer the older romance stories, like Jane Eyre whose man is double her age or Pride and Prejudice who had to marry for wealth or else she would be done for,” he said, looking at me with an amused expression. “Ok. Fair point,” I agreed with him. “But I never said I liked the older romance novels either. I’m an English major and I really believe some of these books

“Don’t think I’m going to let you off on the essay pertaining to why the Amendments we have were ratified and not the others.” “There was always hope,” called James. “Nice try. Get to work.” He pulled out his tablet from Eliza’s book bag at the floor of their seat and after handing over her own, he began to tap on the screen in order to get to his book he needed to read. “What’re you doing to do first?” Eliza whispered. “The easiest,” James shrugged nonchalantly. “I need to read Ernest Hemingway’s ‘The old man and the sea’ for English.”

Emma said, walking deep into the living room. "Thanks." She walked to a set of shelves on the far side of the room, running her fingers over the spines of his books. A lot of them were classics, novels by Dickens, Voltaire, Dumas, Melville, and Hemingway. She smiled when her fingers ran over the spine of not one, but three copies of Mitchell's Gone with the Wind. There were modern novels, too, including Stephen King and Sidney Sheldon, but they didn't look as well read as some of the others.

It could easily have been a school or a boarding school. Nathan's scent was in that hallway, so he assumed there must be something hidden there, but all he saw was an office. She went in, closing the door behind her. That place was the best place she had ever seen in her whole life, full of books and a lot of handwriting. She picked up the first book she found, and it was one of her favorites, only this was a first edition. She sat down on the nearest sofa and swung her legs up. The story takes place in rural England in the early 19th century.

I fan myself with my book, trying to think of anything except sex. The problem is… we’re reading a really boring book in English and the teacher wants us to spend the class period reading. Yep, turns out even shifters having boring old books too. And we’re reading some fictional, forbidden love story between a tiger shifter and a raven shifter. Which sounds great, in theory. But the words they use make it feel more like I’m trying to decipher an ancient language. It’s worse than Shakespeare. Phoenix asks who Shakespeare is and even I don’t have an answer for that one. All I know is that I’d rather be reading Harry Potter during English. Or, literally, anything from this century would be grea
