The manuscript could wait. Don came to the kitchen at one o'clock for lunch. He saw the envelope on the table. He looked at Ernest. Ernest nodded. Don opened the envelope. The editing had been thorough—the publisher had a specific editor assigned to the book who had worked on it for three months and had returned it with the marks of someone who understood the argument and had edited it in service of it rather than in service of their own preferences about what the book should be. Ernest could see this in the way Don examined the manuscript: not flinching, not bracing, but opening to the first page with the quality of someone who trusted the hands the work had been in.
