The Billion Dollar Contract
I stared at the waveform on Davis's screen, watching it spike and dip with sound—proof Adrian was alive, for now.
"Remember," Davis said, "you can listen, but you can't communicate. If something goes wrong, we handle extraction. Not you."
I nodded, and he pressed a button. The audio came through: footsteps, a door opening, and then Adrian's voice saying, "Thank you for meeting with me."
Alexei's voice responded, warm and cultured. "Adrian. Please, sit."
I heard the sound of chairs scraping and tea being poured, and I closed my eyes, listening, helpless.
