“You really don’t.”
For a moment, she just watched me struggle to keep my temper.
Then, finally, she straightened.
“I suppose introductions are overdue,” she said, brushing an invisible speck of dust from her sleeve.
Marcus shifted beside me, tense.
The woman took a step back, giving herself space like a performer about to begin a story.
“My name,” she said calmly, “is Esmeralda.”
The name carried weight… as though it was meant to mean something.
She smiled slowly.
