Hahaha! However, I feel like I have so much more to tell of their story. I could cut it off here, I guess. I would hate it though. I don’t mind open endings, but that’s a little TOO open. There was always a plan for more. There is always more to their story.

He knew what it meant as somehow I seeked a perfect ending to our love story. Or perhaps, not every tale had to have a perfect ending. Would this be our perfect end?

Allowed to contradict itself. Allowed to fail and repair. Allowed to belong to no one. They will not know why. They will not need to. The story does not end. It does not circle back to its beginning. It widens. They were perfectly ready for whatever came next. Because some battles finally end. And some stories become something infinitely better. A life.

The story not finished, nowhere near its end, still going in the ways that stories go when they’re real and alive and not yet ready to be concluded. Not finished. Just continuing. Both of us, together, in that.

Then a pup broke it. “So,” he said thoughtfully, “we are in the middle of the story, not the end.” Luna smiled. “Yes,” she said. “We are.” He nodded, satisfied. “Makes sense,” he said. “Stories are better when they keep going.”

Even though Louis’s frame was much shorter than him, the man always had a way of being able to stroke Alain’s head affectionately. “I promise, Lou. Thank you.” Finally, the two of them just chatted lightly while they finishing their coffee.
