*Piper's POV* It had been forty-eight hours since Jaxon and the pack of fighters left. I felt like I was on edge this entire time. I felt sick to my stomach at the thought that maybe something had happened to him. I just wanted to know he was okay, but I wouldn't know until the fighters returned. "Piper." Matteo's voice came into my mind. I rolled my eyes. I had willingly kept my connection open after Jaxon left just in case anyone tried to communicate with me. Matteo must've picked up that the walls were down as he took his opportunity to mind link.

She just didn’t want to risk me touching her again. That cut deeper than her glare and deeper than words could have. First, Piper is damn weighty for me alone and second, I would have preferred her to talk about it if she was going to give this damn withdrawal attitude and let silence convict me. Finally, after what felt like an endless battle with a drunken banshee, Piper was out of the car. She staggered like a foal on new legs before collapsing against me, clutching my shoulders like I was the only thing tethering her to earth.

Yorick says, sliding his hand back into mine. “Well, now I’m in a bad mood,” Piper says. “Maybe you’re hangry, Hellfire. Let’s go get lunch,” Zach says. “You and your nicknames,” I say, laughing. “Hey, if the nickname fits, who am I to argue. Piper’s got that fiery red hair and a temper to match. I love the passion,” he says, winking at her. “Stop flirting with me,” she says, shaking her head, but her lips are twitching.

Her eyes were drowned in despair. Her soul was slowly fading away. Even then, she kept looking toward the path I'd taken. Like she truly regretted everything. Like she truly wanted to make amends.
