Her face kept flashing in my mind—the soft look she gave me before she turned away, the way my chest tightened like my body knew something I didn’t want to admit.
Finally, I exhaled. “It was supposed to be.”
Mr. Smith nodded once, slow. “You can’t fight the bond forever. The Moon Goddess has her ways.”
“I’m not fighting it,” I said, though even I heard the lie. “I just need time. Once I find the one who killed my parents, once that’s done, then I’ll figure out what comes next.”
He leaned forward, his voice quieter now. “And what if what comes next is her?”
