I could see the subtle changes in her features now, and each one made her more captivating. Her skin, which I remembered as being a bit pale, now had a rosy, healthy glow. Her face was a little plumper, softer, losing the sharp edges, and her under-eye wrinkles and eye bags had faded. And oh, those eyes of hers… those silver orbs shimmered faintly, like moonlight on a still lake. They were the kind you'd get lost staring into.

Ruby had never seen this before. “To reduce puffiness and dark circles,” Liz explained. “Oh… so that’s how it’s done.” Ruby scooted closer and looked at Liz. “Your skin is so smooth.” Ruby was now close enough to notice how Liz’s face was even more flawless. Ruby didn’t have acne or anything, but Liz’s skin was clearly more well cared for, even at this hour before any makeup. “You didn’t know something as basic as this? How have you managed to stay pretty?” Liz mocking her.

The skirt flowed straight down before spreading slightly at the hem, long enough to trail behind me without feeling like it would swallow my steps. No excessive shine. No overwhelming details. My makeup was light and my skin looked even and warm. My eyes were lined softly, lashes dark but not dramatic. A hint of shimmer sat at the corners, catching the light whenever I blinked. My lips were a natural shade, glossy enough to look alive, not painted. My hair was pinned halfway up, loose strands framing my face, the rest falling down my back in soft waves. I lifted my hands slowly, half afraid the image would change.

I want to get my point across and maybe even get under her skin in the process. “You’re in no place to negotiate,” I tell her, my eyes roaming her face. The daylight from the window shines against her pale skin, showing the slightest splatter of freckles along her cheek. It doesn’t look like she’s had any kind of sun recently, so I’m wondering if these are permanently etched into her skin.

And asleep, I can look at her. I'd never noticed before, but for all her wealth of red hair, above and below, her eyelashes are dark.... … wonder if she dyes them.... But her skin is clear and white and unblemished. Her lips are only a few shades darker, their edges more defined by a finely chiselled edge than by hue, and the blush on her cheeks, the palest of rose-pinks, is barely visible.... .... as though all her colour went into her hair.... The sunbeam kisses her face and she stirs....

… **Back to the Present** “Your skin is so fine…” The man’s gracefully long fingers traced the skin of my upper arm in slow tantalizing motions. His magnificent blue eyes stared at my face intently, taking in my every reaction. The lack of light obscured his features and all I could make out were his intense blue eyes. The warmth of his fingers against my skin gave me goosebumps, and suddenly, my body felt sensitive all over.
