The Burning
"No... fires like this don’t just stop. It’ll keep burning until there’s nothing left."
I nodded, staring out at the smoke-filled horizon. There was nothing left. Not of the world we used to know. Not of the people we used to be.
The hours passed slowly, the fire still smoldering below us, but we didn’t dare move. We couldn’t risk going back down, not yet. Not until we were sure the worst of it had passed.
As the sun began to set, casting a blood-red light over the mountains, Ben stood up, stretching his stiff limbs. "We need to find shelter for the night," he said, his voice low but firm. "It's going to get cold up here."
