Floyd x Veneer? That's a pairing I didn't expect to see pop up today. I've been poking around the fandom for a bit now, mostly on Archive of Our Own and a few dedicated blogs on Tumblr. Honestly, the dynamic is more interesting than I first thought. It's not a huge tag, so you kind of have to dig. The best ones I've come across treat their connection as this weird, parasitic-yet-sympathetic thing that happened in 'Trolls Band Together'. There's a fic called 'Chip of Diamond' that's still updating, and it does this amazing slow-burn of Veneer grappling with what they did while Floyd is weirdly the only one who gets the pressure they were under. The writing gets a little purple sometimes, but the character voices are spot on.

My absolute favorite is a completed one-shot titled 'Residue'. It's less romance and more intense psychological drama about shared trauma and the literal piece of Floyd's talent left inside Veneer. It's heavy, but it's so well-constructed. Avoid the ones that just make Veneer a uwu softboy immediately; the good stuff lets him be messy and vain and scared, and lets Floyd be rightfully angry before anything else develops. The tag could use more, but what's there has some real gems if you're into complex, morally grey connections.

I read something once about how the power imbalance between them is the whole point, but trying to write them as just a 'bully and victim' thing feels shallow. Like, if Floyd's just this perfect compassionate savior and Veneer's purely a villain, there's no tension after the rescue.

What's more interesting is the guilt. Floyd saw how scared Veneer was, how manipulated he was by his sister, and maybe he picks up on that insecurity. Veneer's whole identity was wrapped up in fame and being 'the talent,' but he knows he's a fraud. The dynamic could be Floyd, who's secure in his art, trying to help someone who doesn't even know who they are without the stolen spotlight. It's less romance and more about building a person back up from scratch, which is messy and slow.

I'd have them bond over creating something real together, maybe just singing for no audience, where Veneer has to find a voice that's actually his. That shift from stolen harmony to making their own could be the core of it.

Floyd x Veneer? Honestly, I bounced off that concept at first because the canon material around those two is so thin. But that's exactly where writers get to play. The emotional tension comes from building a whole shared history and unspoken rules between them that the source barely hints at.

I've read a few where they're rivals forced into an alliance, and the tension isn't just anger—it's this grudging respect that neither wants to admit. The best one had them communicating through their art, like Floyd composing a melody that subtly answered a challenge Veneer laid down in a painting. It's all about the subtext, the things they can't say out loud because their egos or loyalties won't let them. That space between what they feel and what they do is where the good angst lives.

It works because you start with a skeleton of a dynamic and then hang every possible emotional weight on it. Does it always land? No, but when it does, it's a fascinating study in constructed intimacy.
