They stripped me bare and tossed me in the cold room. It was the day after Genny's birthday. Cute little one-year-old, right? Until someone dumped ice water on her. Fever hit fast. And guess who they all blamed? Me. Helga came swinging, screaming, yanking my hair. Sandro Vaitti? Didn't even look at me. Just, "Why'd you hurt my kid?" I hadn't. He hung up on me. Next thing I knew, I was locked in a cold room for twelve hours. So cold I couldn't even blink. Thought I was gonna die in there.

The next morning, I came down with a cold. It was probably from wandering around barefoot for too long the night before. My head felt heavy, my throat burned, and every inch of me felt miserable. I had just reached for my phone to call the family doctor when the bedroom door suddenly slammed open. Caden rushed inside. There were dark circles under his eyes so obvious that it was clear he'd been up all night. The second he saw the unnatural flush on my cheeks, his expression changed instantly. He strode toward me and instinctively reached for my forehead, only to jerk his hand back halfway there, like he was afraid touching me would hurt me somehow.

I set the shower temperature how I want it, need it at this moment, freezing, then stepped in. I place my hand on the shower wall, letting the little drops of ice hit me on the back. What if whatever worked for humans made things worse for him? But what other choice did we have? "Frost, can you stand?" I asked, slipping my arm around his shoulders. "I need to get you to my room. The bed will be more comfortable than the couch."
